It sounds like you're making the repair harder than it is. You don't need any butt connectors or extra wire.
Your old resistor still has the two broken leads within the harness. Just solder the new resistor to the old leads. But first shorten the resistor leads. Add heatshrink if you like. It shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes to repair.
