I get why someone would be happy to find a nice old vehicle to save money, but can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would pay that kind of money for an out dated, stinky, noisy, relatively underpowered one. Different strokes I guess.
Not different strokes, but rather supply and demand.
HD diesel suvs that are low mile and in great condition are increasingly rare. Combined with the fact that a new diesel “Excursion” if it actually existed, would be the better part of $100k, makes the prices of the older ones more palatable to someone who wants or needs that configuration of vehicle.
Personal opinion, I wouldn’t pay $5 for one. Primarily because 4speed and diesel should have never been used on the same spec sheet! This was also my opinion when they actually made diesels mated to 4 speeds. 4 speed in a diesel is like a power glide behind a gasser. Horrible for real towing.
But better than nothing if that’s all that exists. Now a 6 speed manual tuned up 7.3 Excursion would be worth a second look! - ksssExplorerOlder nice trucks are hard to find, when you see a really well taken care of 7.3 it is a bit unusual and I am sure guys that own them get asked to sell their trucks. It is easy to find a nice 2016 Duramax if you want one so no point in asking someone to buy their personal truck. While I liked my 06 LBZ, and it was a decent truck, I don't miss it, other than the way the back seats folded down, I don't miss it at all.

When my parents had their 05 Duramax truck my dad said the last fear years they owned it every once in a while someone would approach him and asked if he wanted to sell his truck. Fast forward and they now have a much nicer truck a '16 Duramax for ~ 4 years now and no one has asked if he would sell it.
I get it. There is no Ford in that story! LOL

I get your point but a PSD Excursion is a unique vehicle.
While I agree it is not worth the price listed there is really nothing on the market to compare it to. - frankwpExplorerI get why someone would be happy to find a nice old vehicle to save money, but can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would pay that kind of money for an out dated, stinky, noisy, relatively underpowered one. - ShinerBockExplorerI would love to have an old 94-98 12 valve Cummins with a manual trans as a toy, but not as a main vehicle. Of course it would be no where near stock and north of 500 hp.

You can buy a 2016 or late model Duramax anywhere. However a 2005 worth buying will be a little harder to find. Naturally if you spot a 2005 you may inquire about it, however there is no need to inquire about a 2016.
The fact that your parents decided to upgrade to the 2016 shows what they think of the 2005. Like most they wanted an improved truck.
There can be a lot of improvements in 11 years. - dodge_guyExplorer II
