Does his V10 still have the stock engine-driven fan? That should be primary. The electric fan should really only be needed in stop and go traffic. He probably needs a new fan clutch (assuming a previous owner didn't remove it in favor of the electric fan...)

Also, he should think about pre-emptively replacing the oil pump shaft before it breaks.

What's hot? Some people think 220 is hot. What is the exact temperature it gets to?

A similar, but likely different due to difference in model year, modification was done on my '97 7.3 F350. I don't know much about it. My transmission guy did the mod. It did work though, I got more engine braking when letting off the throttle. He did extensive valve body modifications and programming to the E4OD tranny as well, to increase transmission braking, when he rebuilt it the 2nd time.

The overall affect, I was very pleased with the truck's ability to use it's gearing to slow down and maintain speed on grades. It wasn't able to do so barely at all, before he worked on the truck. It was scary.

I was used to my other, gas engine F350, with C6 and 4.56 axle gearing, as well as the E350 diesel with 5R110 tranny. Both of those trucks had far better engine/tranny braking than the 7.3/E4OD had originally.

I don't know if Allison or anyone else makes an hydraulic fan retarder add-on for the Allison 1000 transmission in GM Duramax trucks or not. If one is available, that would be the way to go for anyone with a GM diesel.

The Williams retarder on the Allison MD3050 in my International truck works awesome at slowing the truck on grades. I hold the tranny in lower gears (2nd, 3rd, sometimes 4th, depending on grade and load) and stab the retarder once in a while and the truck creeps down any grade. Over-use of the retarder can overheat the tranny though, so I have to be careful and watch the tranny temp gauge.

Perhaps the truck needs a bigger tranny cooler?

My son in laws Duramax truck was running hot. Turns out, all the heat exchangers (radiator, a/c condensor, charge air cooler, tranny and engine oil coolers) were plugged with dirt and debris. A morning with the air hose and water hose cleaned it up and no more overheating.

Probably a fair bit of machinist work --- that is NOT an electric fan.
Actually that is the norm for the engine, when the fan cuts in the temp should not go any higher.

yes but it is running to hot when the fan kicks in. would like to have it turn on earlier

There is a thermostat that turns the fan on when it is almost to hot ant the fan brings the temp down. Isn't that what you say it is doing?
