2 1/2 year old Maxxis or Carlisle RH

I'm getting new 15" tires for my trailer and my local discount tire dealer has new Maxxis tires with a 2 1/2 year old date code (he's trying to find some with a newer code but no luck yet) and he also has the Carlisle RH tire. I hesitate on the Carlisle because the verdict is still out on the longevity of this newer tire design. I think they have been out about 4 years now with decent results but these tires are going on my flatbed which I can usually get ten years out of them because it is never under constant weight like my camper. The current set (original tires from factory) are 11 years old and they are off brand china bombs.

I'm trying to decide which tire to go with, I'm probably safe with either choice.

The fresh new set of Maxxis tires arrived at discount tire. Three of them are from 2013 and one is a 2012. I guess I'm going to try the Carlisle RH. If my China bombs made it ten years then these should also. If this was going on my camper I would be a bit more concerned.

The moral of the story is you have to check the tire dates codes!

Both tires are priced the same, the Carlisle is a 10 ply and the Maxxis is an 8 ply. I currently have 8 ply. They supposedly have a fresh set of Maxxis on the way. we'll certainly confirm the dates when they show up.

True, but we do haul a show car on it a couple times a year so I really don't want the cheapest tire available either. I've been on the side of the highway a few times, no fun.

Hmmm...Carlisle says testing on the Radial Trail RH was completed in late '11 and was on the street in the first quarter of '12. Not hard to do the math on how long they have been available.

The OP trailer had a off name china brand OEM ST tires and lasted 11 years.

No more than you use a trailer I would put the cheapest tire available on it unless you plan on making lots of long distance trips on the interstate.

Insist on a fresh set of Maxxis. According the NHTSA Ozone degradation i the number one killer of tires and takes place regardless if they are on a trailer or in a warehouse.

I would go with the new Maxxis - don't let the tire dealership push you around. Order them online if necessary and have them installed.

Since you use them on your flatbed I would see if they gave a discount for the 2 year old Maxxis.

We are starting to hear positive feedback on the redesigned Carlisle RH ST tires and I know our local Discount Tire has been pushing them for awhile. It seems like you got good service from your prior set and since they are going unto a flatbed trailer the Carlisle tires may be fine to use.

As noted above you can get newer Maxxis ST tires by having a local tire store order them or online as we did from DiscountTireDirect.com the last time we changed out or rig's tires. They were delivered to my front door via UPS 3 days later. Had our local Discount Tire balance/install them onto our rig.

I'm on my second set of Carlisle RH's load range "E". The first set went 5 1/2 years when I noticed a shifted belt at the end of the season. I replaced them last spring with the same tires. As far as I'm concerned the Carlisle brand had issues back in the early 2000's. They have since stepped it up and I would not hesitate to buy again. I think a lot of the Carlisle bashing comes from those that have old tires and when they fail after 5 years of more but show good tread, they think they are junk!

Maybe you can negotiate a substantial discount on the older tires since they'll need to be replaced sooner.

In three years, the Maxxis tires will be over five years old. That is the age that many think is the time to look for replacements. Cost divided by three is a lot more than cost divided by five. Just saying.

The Carlisle RH have been out since 2011 I think? Do a Google search to see if there are widespread issues with the RH.

Go with known quality of Maxxiss and let others field test carlisle.

Just put new Carlisle E on mine and am satisfied with the performance. Not going to start bomb wars but many are made overseas and marketed in the States with many brand names.
