I have a 2000 Dodge 2500 5.9 Cummins Diesel 47Re transmission on it's way out. 165,000 miles on the clock. Used mostly to pull a 5er 3 to 4 thousand miles per year and 1 to 2 thousand without the 5er. What upgrades would you do to the transmission rebuild to make it cost effective?

At 180k I brought my truck to the shop to install a reinforced TQ designed for the Cummins. I paid $500 for the TQ and $200 for additional parts including a valve body kit. The shop charged me $1500 tax included, that covers about $300 to replace the cooler lines which were rusted through. I should have asked for custom lines as the Chrysler ones cost a mint.

These guys are the best and from looking at your sig photo you drive vehicles well into their prime :B
I'd skip the purple one though. And OBTW I heard Goerend has now outsourced there operation ๐Ÿ˜ž Not positive, but I read it somewhere.
But the Goerend is the end all for most tuned Cummins engines of that era and your era of the 47RE. It was definitely the weak link in that MY.

And just a side note Bob, you went on vacation in my area? and didn't look me up? Ol well I understand :R

The question was for the use to be cost effective.

And the answer is the same. For a bit more that 2K you can have a quality product installed in your truck......once. Or you can pay a local Goober $1,500 or more to do it........more than likely, several times.

IMHO this is the way to go.

What T&P probably meant since your tranny has that much mileage on it, a rebuilt transmission from Goerend or Suncoast might be the most cost effective way to approach it. Totally rebuilt, with a valve body & TC better than the factory OEM. And, they both include such refinements as an improved 1-2 shift lever which is a known problem with the 47RE.

But........at a minimum I would consider the valve body and TC from either company as a good (and not terribly costly) upgrade if you don't want the cost of a completely rebuilt tranny.

We replaced the tranny in our Dodge (see sig) with a Suncoast performance tranny and TQ converter. No more worries.

Happy camping!!! See y'all down the road!!!:)
