Other than the crankshaft position sensor what other issues can occur without being detectable or stored for techs to retrieve?

Well, I have replaced the alternator, power steering pump, radiator (sprung a leak where the plastic meets the metal), brakes lines, fuel lines, muffler, exhaust manifold gaskets, a/c compressor, water pump.

All that, but with 177k the engine has never been opened. I remember reading GM saying the design life of the 8.1 was 200k miles, but I think it will go longer than that. There was a big industrial market for the 8.1 driving generators and such, and also a big marine market until they ended production in 2009

02 sensors get lazy and slow to respond long before tripping a code. This costs you power and fuel efficiency.

The NSB switch was the problem with many including our 2001 8.1 chev.
