2003 Tahoe-grumbling/roaring when turning left issue

I own a 2003 Tahoe with 153k and when I turn left at low speeds I keep hearing a grumbling/roaring type noise. When I turn right, doesn't make noise at all. Also, when vehicle is parked and I turn it left, IT DOES NOT make that noise.
It almost sounds the same as if its in 4wd and your trying to turn, but that's not the case.

Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Classic symptoms of a failing wheel bearing hub. You're lucky it went as long as 153k. GMs are notorious for failed WBs at around 100k. I replaced both WBs in my HHR, my Sierra, and on my old Trailblazer.

And if one is failing, the other will not be far behind. So replace both and save a later headache. If you are handy you can do this yourself and save about $200 in labor for each hub (yes, each). As said above it's not too hard and there are plenty of you tube videos on how to do it.
That's my guess. If you aren't sure bring it someplace and get an expert opinion. It costs a lot of $$ to just throw parts at it based on opinions gotten from the internet.

  • So I jacked the Tahoe up, and when I wiggle it side to side I am getting just a little play with a little noise.. For sure sign of wheel bearing bad?

  • Sounds like wheel bearing to me as well. Jack up the front and see if you can wobble the wheel at all. If it is the bearing its a pretty easy job to replace yourself if you have the proper tools.
  • Check for tire rub on the left side inner fender well. Did you put new tires or wheels on recently? Could result in a rub where previously there wasn't one.

    Hope this helps.
  • Wheel bearing would be first guess; if 4WD/AWD, it'd likely be a bad CV joint. Either way, get it fixed before the wheel falls off. Really.

Yep, my guess too. When turning the wheel while parked, the bearing isn't rotating to make that sound.
