2004 Dodge Durango towing

I have a 2004 Dodge Durango with the 5.7L tow package. Currently we tow a Jayco 23B trailer length hitch to bumper is just shy of 25, weight is 4100lbs empty. We are considering a starcraft 26' bunk house this is a 5000lb trailer and is 5' longer. We typically tow from southwest Ohio to the east coast, and Florida.

Our Durango has a tow rating of 7400lbs, it handles our current trailer just fine. My question is will the additional weight and length be to much for the Durango to handle. I have never pulled anything but our Jayco so I don't want to make this change and then regret the decision. At some point we do plan on upgrading to a larger truck but until then our Durango will be it.

Thanks
  • With a good sway control hitch, I really don't think you will notice the additional weight or length.
  • I suspect the 26 bunkhouse will put you overweight somewhere (towing capacity, hitch weight or CCC) once loaded up. That 5000 lbs trailer is likely closer to 7000 lb fully loaded. So not totally impossible, especially with a HEMI, but it will be close.

I'd worry about sway with that combo since that trailer is approaching the limits a Durango could handle. I suggest getting a good WDH with sway control, like Equalizer or Husky Centerline to keep things in control.

Our friends tow a similar sized trailer with a 2005 Dakota with the 4.7L V8. He can tow it fine, but not all that happy with the performance.
  • Your Durango has several ratings besides tow rating. For most RVers, the TV tow rating would likely exceed some other rating. I recommend taking your current setup to a scale to find out where it stands with respect to all its ratings. Then you'll know how much heavier you can do.
  • Tow rating is a mfg. marketing ploy full of caveats & fine print.....a 150# driver and 20# cargo. In other words meaningless.

Dry weights are also meaningless cause no one tows a trailer empty (which is what trailer dry weight is)

That 4100# dry weight Jayco probably weighs in at 6000# when loaded up ready to go camping.
Right now you have a good towing match/combo

Will you be able to tow the heavier trailer...YES
Will you enjoy towing it.......probably not

    GO weigh your truck/current trailer.......with everybody/all stuff/camp ready
Weigh combo and then just truck
With those weigh numbers you will have a mch better idea on how much room (if any) you have left based on GVWR, GCVWR, AWRs, payload capacity etc.

Better to know the numbers than spend $$ on new trailer guessing it will be OK
