Service records. At the very least, I'd pull an oil sample and send it off to Blackstone in Fort Wayne and get an oil analysis done before buying. That will tell you conclusively if there are internal engine issues. If it's an automatic, I'd do the same with the fluid, even if it don't appear burnt (brown and stinks if burnt).

If the owner balks about an oil analysis, I'd walk away because something is fishy.

Oil analysis keeps everyone honest.

I would look for a slightly newer truck with the 6.7 and leave all those 6.0 & 6.4 issues behind.

If you have to ask, then don't buy it. Great truck, not so great engine.

The 6.4 was almost as bad as the 6.0. Either go older with a 7.3 or newer with a 6.7.

If the issues have been properly addressed, EGR, head bolts and up pipes, all will be good, which is why I'd want to see the service records and / or do an oil analysis. No records, no oil analysis, no buy.

Personally I would LOOK the other way!

If serious then take it to a certified diesel mechanic/shop/dealer and get a full inspection. Then buy an extended warranty from Ford ESP.

Aside from it's other proven problems, the 6.4 is known for terrible fuel mileage. As stated above, move up a year or two and look for a 6.7. you will be glad you did.

I also would skip the 6.4 and look for a 6.7 if financially able to do so.
