2014 Ram 2500 vs 3500 Ride Quality

I really cant comment on the 2500 but I drive a 2014 3500 SRW daily and a 2008 3500 SRW before that and never have I thought "dag this thing rides like a truck". Unloaded the trucks ride firm but far from harsh. You can NEVER have to much truck...... never.

One thing to keep in mind is that no matter which one you choose, you will get used to it after just a short time and the ride will be what you consider normal.

Don't know about Dodge but I just went from a 2500 to a 3500 single rear wheel and almost no difference. On the GM the biggest difference is a overload spring that don't engage unless a load is in the box and bigger wheels and brakes. Not much price difference and you can upgrade to bigger RV anytime. Love the ride of my Ram 2500. Yes if you hit a BIG bump or hole you will feel it but on the road its a smooth ride. Getting 18 MPG with the 6.4L Hemi.

I'm going to buy one of the two myself and haven't decided yet. I've driven both and the 2500 with coils definitely has a nicer unloaded ride. It's firmer than a half ton but in a good way - it doesn't have the same wallowing feel you get with half tons, but yet it isn't too harsh. The 3500 is noticeably firmer but compared to a three quarter or one ton truck from 10 years ago, it's pretty comfortable.

You are correct that most people here recommend going bigger but I don't know. The 2500 payload with the CTD is fairly low but I don't know what that really means as a practical matter. I don't imagine the weight on the rear axle pm a CTD truck is actually much heavier than the Hemi unloaded, and since the rear springs are the same or at least very similar (might have slightly different spring rates), it stands to reason that the real world payloads should be comparable. I guess if you buy that logic you would fall in the camp where you pay more attention to RAWR than payload. The 2500s definitely don't appear to squat much under load but I don't know how meaningful that is.

One practical issue I've found - it's hard to find 3500 CC short boxes on lots as most one tons have long boxes. I can fit a long box in my garage but I'd rather not live with one day to day or try to get one down a narrow forest service road.

I own a 2500, and a good friend has a SRW 3500. There is a noticeable difference in the ride quality, with the 3500 being quite a bit stiffer. The payload is about 1500 to 1700# less in the 2500 - truck for truck.

I'm used to the ride of my 2014 Ram 3500 SRW, and dont think its that bad. I did test drive both the 2500 and 3500 back to back, and there is a noticeable difference. If something happened to my truck, I'd still choose the 3500.

The problem is, "just get a 3500 (SRW)" is easier said than done.

Unless you special order, 3500 SRW's are rare as hen's teeth. Dealers have 2500's running out their ears, and a few 3500 DRW's, but few if any SRW's.

The dealers in our area have more SRW 3500s than DRW. Quite a bit more, actually. It's just the short bed part that can be hard to find.
