4x4 vs 2x4

My wife and I was out window shopping duallys when I come across a 2010 f350 crew cab w 8ft box with the 6.4 diesel. The kicker is it only has 9,000 miles on it. But it's two wheel drive. We are planning going full time in the spring with a 5th wheel probably 37 ft 14,000 lb rig. My original thought was a 4x4 but now thinking why not 2x4. We not expecting to be driving in snow ever again (hopefully). Any average of either.

We prefer boondocking and at least a couple of times a year our 4WD gets us where we want to be, and more importantly, back out and on the road when it's time to go. Your money your call, as for upkeep I spent absolutely nothing on 4WD related issues on my last 3 trucks. Enjoy your new truck and 5er!!!

4x4 or 4x2 is a personal choice. Honestly in my 30+ years of towing a camper. I have never needed 4x4. I had them, and have one now, only because it had everything else I wanted. 4x4 did not enter into the decision.

Honest truth. A 4x2 truck will tow better than a 4x4. It will be more stable. Why, I don't know. But my 2WD trucks have all been more stable, and steady than any of my 4x4 TVs. Maybe it is the height. I have talked to others that found the same thing. 4x2 is just better for towing. My 2004 F150 4x2 was much more stable than my 2013 4x4 is. Neither has sway problems. But I can feel the TT more with this truck.

So it is your choice what to get. Your money, your truck. You are the only one you have to please.

I have always had a 4x4 to get to work. Didn't think I needed one if I wasn't in New England in the winter. Boy did we have fun in Utah, even with just the excursion. 4x4 lets you explore, but you might not need it. We used it over then once to get out of a camp spot.

The main reason we got it is that it opens a huge amount of otherwise inaccessible areas out west. Like this:

House Rock Rd (North Rim GCNP)

and this:

Cathedral Rd (Capitol Reef NP)

You would be unwise to visit those areas without 4WD tho we only used it occasionally on the dirt roads in.

But on the downside you have more gear to maintain on the truck and it adds weight which subtracts from payload. I've never needed it in the snow myself.

This.

Even if you will never drive in snow, if you go out west, you will see roads that are marked 4x4 only. If you don't want to drive on those roads, and will stay in paved parks and campgrounds only, you will be fine without 4x4.

It really comes down to what kind of camper you are. There is no blanket right or wrong answer. Only right or wrong for you.

I have owned both and will stick with a 4X4, when u need it Man U need it....even in Florida! Your call cause it's your money. Me I would pass on the 6.4 and go to the 6.7. Just my take, good luck on your decision!
A truck, a camper, a few toys, but most importantly a wonderful family.

I've also seen a lot of motorhomes, especially out west, towing 4x4 Jeeps behind them.

Only need a 4x4 if off by yourself. Otherwise there is always a 4wd around that would love to help when needed. Carry a tow strap and you are good to go.

4x4 or 4x2 is simply your choice. Myself, I wouldn't consider a truck without 4x4!

Now, the 6.4 engine your looking at.....well, let Google be your friend.
I wouldn't fool with it if it was given to me.

I have 4x2 and don't miss a 4x4. I don't think I've ever seen a 4x4 motorhome and there is a bunch out there camping.

I wouldn't touch a 6.4 unless I had Bill Gates money. Even then I wouldn't touch one.
Your money though; I wish you luck. ๐Ÿ™‚
