6.4L Power Stroke oil?

Is anyone using Shell Rotella in their 6.4L Ford Power Stroke?

My last company truck was a 2004 6.0L PSD. We had used Rotella and after many, many problems we switched to Motorcraft 15w40 at the recommendation of our Ford dealer. My current company truck is a 2008 6.4L PSD. We continue to use Motorcraft in the current truck. The reason we switched was in response to issues we kept having with the HPOP on the 2004.

Since the 2008 doesn't have an HPOP I'm thinking of switching the '08 to Rotella so I can use up some old stock I have laying around.

Has anyone used it? Should I be concerned by switching back?

Thanks,
Eng.

I don't think you'll see 1,000,000 miles out of the 6.4L!;)

Typically Rotella has been one of the best oils out there to use. The 6.0L went bad once it went into the ford. Wasn't as bad in the International. What surprises me is a company having nothing but issues with a brand(ford) that continues to buy them. Either way I would go ahead and use the rotella up if it is still clean and sealed.

I've used nothing but Rotella in my 6.0 and 6.7 PSD's. Started off w/ the dino oil in the 6,0 and later switched to synthetic Rotella w/ no issues w/ the oil.

As for getting rid of the used oil, local garage, farm tractor dealer, Ryder/Penske(?), local ATV/snowmobile/independent shop, mass transit garage. Worse case, call either a oil company for recommendation or used oil pick up business.

When talking about issues are you talking about foaming issues with the Rotella?

If so, like you pointed out, the 6.4 does not have an oil fired injectors like the 6.0 has. You won't have any problems using it in your 6.4.

Yeah.

When dealing with the problems of the 6.0 our Ford dealer claimed the high operating pressure in the HPOP would foam some oils due to detergents in the suspect oils. We changed because we were at our wits end with that 6.0. We have had better luck with the 6.4L so I was tempted to change back. On an $80 oil change the difference is about a $5 savings with the Rotella. I have some old stock that I found during a recent shop cleaning and was debating using or giving it away.

The difference in price isn't really a driving factor but sometimes the Motorcraft PSD oil is hard to find whereas Rotella is everywhere.

Now my next problem is finding someone with a waste oil shop heater that will take 300 gallons of used engine oil. Hmmm.......

Ford doesnt produce oil, its packeged for them by one of the refiners that you would be buying from such as Shell, Mobil etc

Check the back of the bottle for the API rating. CJ-4 and CK-4 would be good. If it is CI-4 or less, I would not use it

I would use Shell Rotella long before I would use Fo Mo Co oil.

The 6.0 and 6.4 had problems that led to many law suits by Ford. The oil had nothing to do with the problems those engines were having.

The problem with the HPOP on your 2004 was the pump design itself and had nothing to do with the type of diesel engine oil you were using.

Your 6.4PSD requires a CJ4 API rated diesel engine oil so any brand that has this rating will be fine.

I had a 6.4 for 9 years. I used Motorcraft 15w40. Changed oil and filter every 5000 and fuel filters every 10000.
