AC help

We are on the road near Memphis and it is 90 degrees. Our AC isn't working. We are on our third AC unit in several months and this one has been used for 4 days so far. It worked fine until last night when I noticed it didn't seem to shut off. But the camper seemed cool. Today we traveled from Little Rock to Memphis and now it won't blow cold air. We are supposed to be here for four days but not in this heat if we can't figure this out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It's an Advent. We already checked the filter.
  • If it has an air intake blocked it could be icing up. I had this happen in Yellowstone a few years ago. Seems totally counter intuitive but try running the fan only for a while with the a/c off. If it is icing up then the warmer air going across the coils will thaw it out so you can start getting cooler air again. Same thing can happen if a duct is blocked, or it has been running continously for a few hours.
  • sounds like you should be rv shopping. and a cheap window unit will save the day.
  • If it became a survival thing, I'd suggest to pick up a window shaker at Walmart and a piece of foam insulation to trim it out in a window.
  • Thanks for the advice. The fan had come loose because of a broken bolt. My husband fixed it and now all is well.

The AC unit isn't right for our RV but we have to go through three before the insurance will let the service guy install a different brand/type. Our camper is a lemon. We've had nothing but trouble with it since we got it three years ago. This is just another thing on a long long list

THAT is highly unusual for an RV to have to replace 'three' of them in less than one year?. :?

I'd be doing some serious face to face discussions with who is installing these ac units on your RV.
  • I would agree with Son of Norway. There are multiple places where the A/C voltage, both the positive and the negative, gets from the camp ground post to the air conditioner. If you have a wire that is just a bit loose, that totally upsets the voltage at the end.

I would definitely try rigging up a heavy duty extension cord from the post up to a roof top connection at the air conditioner to prove whether it's a power problem, or something else.

A No. 12 wire extension cord can be connected to a new post plug at one end, and the other end connected up on the roof. That is a pain, but certainly getting to all the respective screw connectors in the plugs and panels is also.
