Accessing the PCM on my 2002 8.1 2500.....
I guess it is under the battery. Is it simpler to access it from above or below?

Not sure on the 8.1 but on my old 6.0 it was on the drives side behind the battery just above the inner wheel well. You access it from the top. It is inside a black plastic enclosure about the size of a lunch pale. Open the enclosure and you will see the PCM with a wire harness coming out the side. THe harness is removed with a couple of ~10mm bolts and the PCM slides out. Be sure to disconnect the battery ahead of time.
