Anode rod question?

My new to me, 2011 Jayco's water heater did not an anode rod installed...just a plastic plug. I have a rod now but am wondering: is there anything special I should do before installing? Just flush the tank a bit to get crud out? Is there something I could do that would help clean any deposits from the inside of the water heater?

Thanks!
  • If it is a 1/2 plug it is a water heater that does not use anode rods. What brand is it?
  • If your TT doesn't have an anode rod, then you don't need to install one. I don't have an anode rod on my water heater. My son in laws TT has an anode rod. Difference is what the tank inner lining is made of.
  • The WH is probably made by Atwood and doesn't need an anode.
If it's made by Suburban then it does indeed need one but otherwise it's a waste of time and money as it will serve absolutely no purpose.

    X2
  • Maybe there's a new to you manual about the water heater. RV stores sell wands to flush crud out.
  • Anode rods are mainly used when you have a STEEL tank type water heater, like in a house. It's usually glass or porclin lined and the anode is there as a bait, the rod rusts instead of the tank. (simplified ion exchange)

My tank is plastic, so no need for it. Others might be aluminum, brass, bronze or copper, so no need. Find your model number and look it up, it will state if it's required, usually 3-7 year cycle.
  • Your water heater didn't have an anode rod cause it doesn't use one.
1/2" nylon drain plug....Atwood WH. Aluminum alloy tank.......No anode rod.

Yes the aftermarket sells 1/2" threaded anode rods for use in Atwood WHs because they can sell them. Doesn't mean it is needed/required. Not recommended by Atwood.

Take it back....get your money back and tell them No Thanks.

Drain and flush your aluminum atwood wh tank 2X a year......more frequently if you live/camp in an area that has very hard water.
  • Don't use anything except the plastic plug. It's a good idea to pick up an extra. They usually come 2 to a card for around $5.
