another dreaded tire question

I have a 2012 Silverado Ext. Cab 2WD that i'm pulling between 6000 and 6500lbs loaded. I'm getting ready to replace the factory P rated tires. First question is do I really need the LT and if so what do you recommend for a tire. My thinking is the LT's would be better but also don't want to change to them if not necessary. I have heard a lot of good things about the Firestone TransForce tires. My big question is how are they in snowy conditions? This is used as a daily driver year round. I appreciate any input anyone can give me.
  • Look at the sticker on the inside of your door jamb, it will tell you the tire required by the DOT for your pick up.
  • I was working on 'silverado' but hadn't quite got there yet.

What's your take on the tire discussions of LT vs. P for lighter trailers like mine and less?
  • I have had both Transforce HT (highway tread) and AT (all terrain tires). Both are good LT tires but I prefer the AT tread in the snow. The HTs just don't have enough traction in my opinion.
As far as LT vs P rated tires on your Silverado (I assume 1500), LTs will not increase your payload and/or axle ratings but will provide a more stable platform for towing loads that are at the top of your trucks ratings. They will definitely make the truck ride rougher. Also need to make sure your wheels can handle 80psi.

Thank You for your reply, I honestly never thought about the wheel rating. I will have to check that out.

I trust the tire shop, and I avoid tire discussions. I just like to find stuff for others.

    LOL probably a wise move.
  • I've had several 1/2 tons and always upgraded to LT tires. But that's just me. I don't like the mushy ride of P's. I found LT D rated to give a more solid feel along with better handling. The sidewall won't roll under as bad with LT's therefore making the front feel crisper when turning. You also get better tread options as well. They may or may not make towing better, just depends on how one perceives better.
