Anybody down/upgrade from a newer camper to an older one?

What I mean is Im thinking of selling my 2004 Lance 835 and using the approximate value sum I would receive for an older yet larger TC . Im hoping it would be an approximate financial wash. I will be getting a DRW F350 pretty soon (I hope)and then Ill be able to get a larger camper without spending much more money, Has anyone else out there done this
  • For me, I would be worried about having to replace the frig and maybe having to replace the roof and air conditioner.
  • I haven't done that - but I would think if you look for someone's "baby" (kept inside and maintained nicely) you will probably be happy with it?
  • Sort of in that process right now. We traded our beautiful Lance 981 about 18 months ago for a TT to get more room. It's definitely roomy, but we've found we can't get into the spots we want many times.

Even so we were not in the market for anything, but a great deal came up on a 1995 Lance 880 and we bought it. Our plan is to evaluate whether we would enjoy using this either in addition to or possibly even in place of the TT. Worst case, if we find that we just cannot use it, we will sell it and there's no way we'll lose money.
  • The previous post was made a while back while we were negotiating for the Lance 880. I'd like to add some thoughts now that I have it home.

There are lots of positive aspects in my mind to this "downgrade. " first and foremost would be no payments. Paid cash and own it outright. That really leads to the 2nd big advantage: I'm not afraid to work on it! With the 981 I let the dealer do everything but the most mundane chore. That certainly had its disadvantages if an emergency arose in the middle of nowhere. With the older camper I feel I already know it's systems better even though I've only had it home for a week.

Next advantage is the weight. I have a Dually that's capable of handling a TC with a slide but the weight of the old camper without slide is considerably less and it obvious when driving. From the brochures it appears the difference in weight between my 981 and the present 880 is about 800# and that's a bunch. The choices for new TC's without a slide is severely limited as it is for all other types of RV's.

Sure there are things I'll miss, but these advantages may well outweigh the positives. We'll see.
  • There is no simple answer and there is good reason why I drove 40-years old Prevost when kids were at home, but IMHO shorter camper with slide beats the longer one without hands down.
Than you have to compare tanks capacity, refrigerator size etc.
With dually weight is the last thing you'd have to worry about.
  • Understand on the tanks. Regarding the weight, I haven't checked the Lance 8' w slide but I'll bet it's also heavier than this 880.

For me, if I'm staying longer than a couple of days somewhere I have the TT and of course my tanks on it are bigger than any of the truck campers except for the monsters. I realize that's a rather unique situation.
