ARGH! Black tank odor inside camper but figured it out

Finally figured it out actually. Had checked the tank, then removed the toilet and checked the seal at the floor, THEN today removed the cap off of the plumbing vent with the intent of checking for blockages in the stack. And there it was ... ta da ...

The 1 1/2" black PVC extended all the way up to the bottom of the cap, effectively blocking the plumbing stack. No air could escape because the PVC was snug to the bottom of the cap.

So, I will trim the PVC to the top of the vent base piece, ensure it is a snug fit inside the fitting of the base (so odor can't go back down into the camper around the pipe) then replace the cap.

Wonder who installed that vent cap ... dumb-ta-da-dumb.

Looking forward to the camper not smelling when we stop.
  • Another smell trick is when the smell is actually coming from the grey tank. On some campers, like mine, the vent cap is under the kitchen sink. That cap had rattled loose on mine and the smell of decay was filling my camper. I first tried masking it with treatment to the grey tank but when I found the loose vent cap and tightened it, all was well again.
  • We're RV noobs, and rushing to get home + stupidity left us with a full black tank sitting in our driveway. For 3 weeks. In 90+ degree heat.

I was afraid to go in the camper. I was afraid to walk past the side with the vent stack. An RV guy I work with told me, "you're screwed. It will take MONTHS to get the smell out of there."

No smell at all. And I mean NONE. The camper still smells new inside.. even in the bathroom. From outside there's not the slightest hint that your'e standing 1' away from an outhouse.

Lesson learned: when everything's working, it really does work.
  • Happy to hear you found it. I wonder how many on here with odor problems have a similar situation. If working properly there should never be odors inside.
