attaching "stuff" to the walls

Hi

I am fussy when it comes to attaching anything to a trailer wall as i am concerned about structural integrity. So when it came to mounting coat hooks and a medicine cabinet i knew what i wanted to do but wasn't sure how i would hide it. thats where my wife the "crafty one" comes into play. I will let the pictures speak for themselves. let me know your thoughts. thanks

  • your right owen, sorry I got sidetracked went I sent the post. The reason for the horizontal backers was to allow for mounting of whatever, where ever we want with out worrying about support or additional holes in the walls. we can make changes as needed and only affect the backers. My wife "matched" the wall pattern with 2 matched colours from the hardware store, a roller and saran wrap. she rolls one colour on allows it dry. then the second colour is rolled on,covered with saran while still wet. immediatly peel the saran wrap off and that is what you end with.
  • I love the idea especially since we have 2 similar such mods in our house. Both are made of oak, milled and shaped. The one in DSs bathroom has similar hooks to the ones shown for his towels. We have a long- 9 - 10' - hallway coming from the garage that is totally useless space. I asked DH to do a similar set up for us to hang coats, etc during the winter. You have to go half way across the house to find the coat closet otherwise. Securely attached, these are very handy.

I have always used either Command products or good old sticky Velcro to hang pix or other things in both our HTT and TT. The Velcro comes off easily and without damage to the wallcovering. Any remaining residue gets a bit of Goo Gone and perfect! The glitch came when I used the sticky Velcro to attach something very lightweight to an interior door. When I needed to remove it, it also removes the finish. Well, darn! Went to all DHs selections of stain and the doors are not faced with real wood, but a man-made panel, which looks exactly like real wood, except when you try to touch up some stain. Nope, won't accept stain. Went back for the touch up sticks and found that they just left a nasty, waxy mess. Cleaned that off. Since this item is something that's going to hang in that spot forever - AKA as long as we own Rocky - I just got a decorative curtain rod with ring/clips and it looks great. Warning is to check wood surfaces in an inconspicuous spot before attaching. We did manage to mostly conceal the 4 small spots, but I still know they're there. Darn!
  • Command Strips.....

Everything that we attach to our 5vr walls are with Command Strips.
Large pictures, small pictures, key chains, wash cloth rings etc.
7 yrs. of bouncing down the road FT and nothing has ever come looose/slipped/fallen off.

Just have to clean wall area as per instructions and they stick/stay stuck.
  • We use those little 3M hooks that pop off (or supposed to) when you pull the tab. We've had good luck with them but they are no near as nice as the hooks in the photo.
  • I use 1" hollow wall anchors if the wall is not solid.
  • Assuming your back support is screwed into studs, that's a fine way to secure even a substantial weight. If your camper is framed with aluminum studs, you would have to use self-tapping screws. Another simple option that doesn't require a backer board is to use molly bolts. They come in different sizes and some are specifically designed for thin material. The only caution: Molly bolts cannot be removed after installing them.
  • I believe what they did is put boards across the entire wall and screwed the boards into the studs behind the wall. Then they mounted the mirror onto the boards. It's the most common way to secure objects, and very often used with decorative wood attached to studs to support a TV swing arm and a TV.
