Awning fabric replacement for rear TC awning

I either need to replace the fabric on my AE/Dometic awning or remove the thing. The fabric is burned through on the top. I have never actually used it, though I have unrolled it a couple of times to see what it looks like. On the internet, is seems like most of the replacement fabric companies are charging for 12' awnings and up - even if yours is only 6 feet wide.

Is there some one that actually sells a replacement for a small awning? Has anyone just sewn their own? Or had a local shop make one?

I might try calling Dometic to see what they want. My past calls to Dometic (refer and Heki skylight parts) have not been very satisfactory. Prices very high, huge shipping charges, long lead times. But maybe the awnings are different.

Most of the aftermarket suppliers start at around 12' wide, same price it if is 2' wide. I measured mine, it is 63" wide and 93" long. I might just do what you suggest and shorten it. To get it off the roller requires drilling out the rivets on the cap, but not that big a deal.

Just take the roller off the side posts and take that in the cord /fix end is at the TC end.

If you mean it is weathering/rotting at the exposed edge where it attaches to the luff rail which is secured to the TC. Liff is a sailing term to name a part of a sail...in the RV world I use it to refer to the edge of the awning fabric that has a cord sewn in so it can be pulled thru the c shaped rail that holds it to the TC.

All you need to do because usually the awning has more fabric than needed to extend the canopy...is take the fabric to a good car upholstery shop and have them trim off the rotted fabric and sew in a new cord. If you are handy you should be able to remove the roller and fabric, but the shop can too, but it will cost.

Other thing is go on line to Dometic and get the part number for your fabric and a local dealer and order it...that 12 foot comment is totally bogus...can't your TC manufacturer give you the part number for the canopy, then you can get the fabric replacement number.

This will get you started.

Try awning shops locally and match the weight of the fabric. Sewing the ends on with a cording foot on your machine no biggie. Use the old one as a template for length and width. Just two screws on each end and it will slide right out. Sew er up and slide back in matching locations of screws from the original. Biggest issue is holding the springs and not losing an eye or tooth. If it's a manual screw in type and not one you pull out then release and it rolls itself up the spring won't be the I believe. Now electric motor..... if you really don't use it just take the thing of and sell it to someone who wants to mess with it and fill any open mounting holes or just leave the awning track there and forget it if it's not a case awning. Either way is going to have to come off to be fixed. Happy awning frustrations, had my share in recent months.
