Awning lights

Hello.

Relatively new to RVing and I have noticed at campgrounds that most people have colorful lites attached to their awnings. I have seen clips to hold the lites, but since the awing rolls around the bar, dont you have to take the clips off to close the awning? What do you do in the event you need to close up in a hurry due to a storm. Any recommendations on clips?

Love your thoughts.

Cheers~
  • I do believe the clips that slide in need to be removed to close it. We used those when we were seasonal as we left the awning open all year with tie downs. Currently we use plastic clothes pins but only put lights up a couple times a year. For just a weekend we generally don't take the time to put them up. One pull of the lights and they all come down.

I do take the clips off the awning channel, if it looks like I'll need to take the awning in. The clips I got were from WalMart, just a little plastic t-shaped thingy that slips in the channel, has a hole for the s-hook to hold the lights. My lights, non-LED, are sort of a retro 50s look, with flamingos and little rounded trailers. Those little t-shaped thingies slip right out real easy, so it's never been a problem taking the awning in.
  • Is there a cheaper source for these lights? The wifey likes the big colorful globes, but the sets we found were quite pricey and didn't even include the bulbs.
  • Your better off getting a set of LED lights and attaching them to the gutter where the awning slides into. I used to hang lights off the awning. After one to many storms that come through at 3 in the a.m. You'll be glad you don't have anything hanging off the awning.

My Multicolored LEDs came from Amazon for about $45 they can be any color you want them to be, are dimable and fade.
  • we use the rope lights looped down from the awning groove which accepts the plastic clip strips. I cut the 1' pieced into 4" lengths to allow the lights to hang in loops rather than one solid flat piece, either way, I'd not worry too much about rolling them up in a pinch just to get them out of the wind when a storm blows up. I remove them when travelling but I probably wouldn't have to. If you were going to put glob lights and clips, I'd say ripping them off quickly during a storm would still be preferable to having the awning torn off the trailer. Lights are much cheaper than awnings.
  • Thanks for the smile. I enjoy the awning light threads.
  • Not mine, but I did something similar to this one. Less fancy, but simple once installed.
  • went a different route I got an 18ft led rope light, that I can plug into the electrical outlet on the side of the trailer. I recently got a outdoor timer (like the one used for Christmas lights) that has a remote control so I don't have to go outside to turn the lights on or off. I used double sided automotive tape to secure the rope light under the awning, and ran the wire down along the rear awning arm to the timer, to the outlet. It is not extremely bright, but there is enough light to light up under the awning or the side of the trailer without lighting up the entire campground. http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t487/tsgtbdl/Mobile%20Uploads/9613B924-234A-4E46-9BC4-605B7E2EA3B8_zpsf7givwap.jpg
  • I have a set of the clips I got a new RV with the LED Strip and Electric Awning so I'll never use them again.... If you want them PM me your address and I'll send them to you
  • We don't bother with the awning lights anymore. Even when tied down the awning would flap and we were afraid it would tear in the wind. We'd have to go out and remove the lights to roll it in. Too much hassle. If we need light we use the light over the RV door. He'd rather sit inside and watch TV or read after supper so we don't sit outside anymore.

I do miss the lights, sitting outside, campfires and camping as we did before.
