Bad smell

:) Thanks for the LOL billtext....too funny. You know, I'll have to check my plumbing, at least what I can see because it does seem like the design of the 1191 might exascerbate the issue. My old camper didn't do it, and that other 1191 owner told me it constantly happens to him. I'd like to verify the plumbing has the pieces it needs to be properly vented.

I also have to admit, the extent of my "searching" for the adjustable corks was one stop at an Ace (Meyer's Hardware in Golden for you locals) on my way out of town. Funny how many of my mods or fixes tend to be either on the road as a good excuse for a stop in a town and something to poke around with on the camper, or as a last minute stop on my way out of town. So I've neither done a complete search, nor thought about the easiest way to build one. Nice being able to just ask you guys and "cheat". The other 1191 owner asked once and felt he got shut down and didn't pursue it. I have thicker skin than that and figured someone else out there might want to know.

Bryan, as I was posting it to begin with on a whim, I thought "the first thing Bryan will do is say "go to freakin' McGulkins" since they are the last best independant hardware store I know of around here. If I really want something, or to find out what options are out there, in this area, a trip to McGulkin's is the answer. But there are also Ace hardware stores and there are GOOD Ace hardware stores. I know now that at least a good Ace store ought to have that part Whazoo showed.

Just tried and if you click back on the catalog pages they have stoppers with a flip over lever, like the old fashioned Thermos bottles. ( darn am I that chronologically enhanced that I remember these.)

Hey Bryan and Brian, I use one of those puppies in my shower drain. The picture is 2in. but I think mine is 1 1/4in. They're at Ace and they have several styles of screw downs, mines not an exact match but same overall. You can google "drain plug" at Ace or other hardware stores. I know you've seen them before...

You might be thinking of the Oatey Waste Plugs that are in the plumbing dept of HD & Lowes. Clicky

I would have to think that if there is material being projected from the p-traps, it is a poor design of the plumbing. To project, you would need to build up sudden pressure from the tank material sloshing towards the area the pipe is connected to the tank. This is why the plumbing should only tap the tank top near the center, never on the ends or sides.

Back to the OP question. We use to have the issue in our old 69 Franklin on occasion. We usually would find something in the rear of the camper not properly closed creating a vacuum on the camper pulling the smell into the unit. Until we could stop to investigate, we would crack a window towards the front of the camper to equalize the pressure.

As a kid, it was ride in the TC or have 5 people in a regular cab that wasn't safe by todays standards. Today, with all of the safety designed into the cabs, there is no way I would let my kids ride in the back.

That happens to us a ton. A fellow 1191 owner complained to me about the same thing WRT the sink. I bought rubber corks that I jam in there (sink and shower) as tight as I can and it sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. When it doesn't it's ugly. I've had the walls of the bathroom covered with the P-trap water many times. I try to remember to lay a towel in the sink on long trips to at least keep the splashing down. I'd like to find some corks that are adjustable....seems like I saw some once where there is a flat washer on the bottom and on the top, and you crank a bolt to squash the rubber out wide enough to lock into place.

Anybody seen these anywhere?

You might try McMaster Carr. I needed some variuos size plugs similar to what you have described, some with wing nuts , some that had to be inflated with air. Can't remember what they are called to make the search easier.

Make your own, Brian. A couple of washers (washer for carriage bolt works best/or file a washer) and a wing nut and you have your own compression plug, by using your rubber plug. McGuckins (unique Boulder Hardware Store, for those out of Colorado). Or most marine stores have them for bilge tanks.

I have looked in several hardware stores around here without luck. The good old hardware store that carried everything is going by the wayside in favor of HD's and Lowe's. I haven't been thorough or anything, but I struck out in my feeble attempt. I think I went to a do-it-best and an Ace.

That type of plug is used to close off the drain in small boats, typically in the transom. Look at a marine supply house, such as West Marine.
