Bike Rack for Pickup with a Trailer (not 5th wheel)

I just bought this bike rack.

It is one of those things that I say, "I wish I thought of that".

  • This is what I made:

    I built a bed divider.

Then added a couple fork rail adapters to the back and repositioned it:

The whole setup was under $100 and works great. I originally thought about the tailgate pad, but I didn't want to lose the use of my backup camera. That thing is invaluable when hitching up.
  • I'm going to build this! I've been looking for the best way to haul bikes and maximize organization and space.
  • I made a PVC bike rack for our five bikes. It was a perfect set up to park bikes at the campsite too. They stay organized that way and are not parked all around the site.
  • I like both concepts...the softride shuttle pad and Chuck D's PVC pipe rack.

I need to do something quick cause both my daughters are going up a bike size and don't want to transport new bikes loose in back of our pickup. They occasionally get scratched when they rub on each other.

Plus, the PVC stand can be stored in the garage with bikes in place.
  • Sure, there are lots of ways to haul bikes in a truck. But this is about the only one I know of that costs under $100, can carry 5 bikes, and can be rolled up and put under the back seat of the truck in a minute!

I've seen those. They are intended for short distance, low speed shuttling of mountain bikes and not general transporting. That's why its called a shuttle pad. A couple of good bounces at freeway speeds will still do nice some damage to your tailgate.

I made one with PVC pipe. For less than $35 including the tie downs.

X2. Added 2 "Ts" to the bottom of mine. The Ts fit into the holes for my table in the TH. Or I can throw it in the back of the truck for day trips.
  • I went to RECRAC.COM and bought two sets of bike clamps from them...They mount to the side of the pick up bed and lock in a bike on each side of the bed, levying most of the bed for other things. Been using them for 4 years now and love them. You can even get stand off that will connect a bike to the bike thats clamped off inside your bed.
  • Nah, I've probably driven 10,000 miles with my bike on one of those, including long trips from Utah to California, Oregon, and BC. No problems w/ damaging the bikes or the tailgate. Although that one appears to have straps (my Dakine didn't), I'd put a tiedown strap over the top of the bikes to keep 'em in place for longer trips.

It is an excellent way to transport bikes. I wish I hadn't gotten rid of mine when I sold my last truck ... I'm using an old blanket for now until I get another one.

    Good luck!
