Brake controller

My newish silverado 2500 has a reese/draw tite brake controller. Not sure if it's time delayed or proportional. Old truck (Tundra) has an older prodigy that I'm sure is proportional. I don't know exact model but it has the dial for power adjustment, boost button, manual lever, and led readout. It's a fine controller but I reckon I bought it 7-13 years ago. It was the best one at the time.

Are the new prodigies appreciably better?
Should I re use the old prodigy on the new truck or just use the Reese it came with?

Thanks
  • No factory brake controller on this 2500 lt. Funny, I looked at a used wt model and it had the factory brake controller. It turns out my existing prodigy us the p2. I'll probably just get a new pigtail and install it on the chev unless the p3 far better. Will ditch the reese.
  • I thought that your new truck would have the GM installed factory brake controller? Mine has one, I wonder if it's a option now or has always been?

Looked it up, and seems you more than likely have a time based controller. Find out for sure. If it is time based, It is useless. Get rid of it. the Prodigy is VERY VERY VERY good. Your Best choice going for a TV with out a built in controller...
Remember a time based controller will come to full braking power a few seconds after the accident. The Prodigy will come to full power the instant you need it.
  • My Prodigy P2 is over 10 years old. I've used it with 2 different travel trailers and 3 different tow vehicles. Prodigy controllers have a lifetime warranty. What would hold you back from using it on your Silverado?
  • GM TV, so has the best brake pedal switch with about 0.015" movement to
turn it on and is the basis for best/better trailer braking, IMHO

How much is your TV worth?

How much is your trailer worth?

A brand new Prodigy P3 is about $130 on sale/Amazon/etc

My P3 and touch the Suburban's brake pedal without moving the MC rod
will turn on the trailer brakes to whatever preset have dialed in

Can stop the whole thing without ever getting the TV brakes turned on,
albeit takes a bit longer to come to a stop during testing. As the whole
setup decelerates, the P3's accelerometer will take over to increase
    power to the trailer brakes

Can push the brake pedal a bit farther to turn on the TV's brakes and
    get them into the game...

Key is setting up the trailer brake controller correctly and am sure
that is the problem with most who complain about bucking/etc. Also
adjusting/tuning/repairing the trailer brakes another key issue

Suggest you consider getting a new P2 or P3...same functionality, except
the P3 has more display stuff
  • Without knowing which Reese/Draw-tite controller you have and which Prodigy you have, it will be hard to know what to say. I loved my old Voyager brake controller, which was old style proportional, and anything newer in technology than this 90's technology should be better.
