I've found we have to cover up during the Pacific NW winter: just too much rain, moss, pine needles, etc.
My experience mirrors the OP. All my tarps are worn out from UV after two years.
Now, I buy a 16 X 20 heavy duty plastic tarp for about $50 and replace it every two years.
