Can a 1999 Jeep Wrangler safely tow this

Someone wants to purchase our Teardrop, which has electric brakes, and plans to tow with a '99 Jeep Wrangler. He will have brake controller installed in Jeep. I know the wheel base is very short. Can he safely tow this through mountainous areas?

Our teardrop is larger than most teardrops, Benroy style, and is about 6 ft tall. It weighs about 1,500 pounds unloaded. We have towed it with no problem with our 2008 Volvo wagon. His Jeep Wrangler looks so tiny! He said he pulled a 2,000 lb. U-Haul trailer load with household items through the mountains of Colorado.
  • Seems like it "should" be able to. Only way to know for sure is to check the weight limits on the door jam sticker of the Jeep.
  • My father in law had a 4.0 wrangler with a 150@ ish lb pup and he really felt like it struggled, both in power and in handling....his had 33's though so that impacted performance for sure.

I had an 87 wrangler and pulled a 2200 ish lb boat and trailer and it did fine...I had a 4.2 inline 6 I believe though. Mine was NOT lifted nor did it have oversized tires.

So, depending on the set up of the wrangler the answer may be maybe.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks!
  • Hard to see your baby go and you want him to have a good home?
  • I think after his trip home he will probably invest in a truck. I mean it will do it but a jeep to me is a novelty type rig. Awesome built for off roading in some cases, but that short wheel base can become an issue when towing. My friend had one, sold his F150 and pulled his 6x12 trailer loaded down with just his sons racing go carts with his Jeep. He hated it, said it was way to much for the tow. Now I have seen others on the board here pull with them so there comments hold more wieght then mine. I like jeeps but if I owned one it would be for scouting out some real cool camping areas or off road trails.
  • The '99 Wrangler is rated to tow 2,000 lbs BUT with the short wheelbase in some situations it could be "fun". In the 2011 models Jeep added sway control to the firmware when the Wrangler is factory equipped with the tow package to help with this. From what I can tell on my 2011 the firmware can detect a sway situation long before i can in the seat of my pants.
  • I tow with my 07. JK, I limit the load on my flat bed trailer to 3500# most of the time I'm not that heavy. I have a 7 pin trailer connector, and a brake controller in the jeep.

I've changed the transmission once. in 110k miles
  • I was reading a article in Trailer Life where a Jeep was pulling a 31' travel trailer. It was a 'light' 31' trailer, but still well above 7,500 pounds.

Check the tow ratings to make sure. It depends a lot on the rear axle ratio, if there are oversized tires, and what engine and especially the transmission. Any automatic will be good for a lot of weight, but many manual transmissions they limit, due to starting ability on a grade without destroying the clutch.

  • the Jeep should have no problems with a Teardrop. Contrary to what many think. A Jeep makes a good TV in as long as it stays in side of it's weight rating. And while they do have a short WB. they have a really short rear over hang. Meaning that the coupler is really close to the rear axle. Giving the trailer less leverage to move the Jeep. I towed pups as heavy as the tear drop with my CJ5. No sway period. I also towed pups with a 98 Grand Cherokee. Very short. Did a great job with a 2600lb popup. Was more stable than my 96 reg cab F150.
  • Thanks for all the comments. I just don't want the new owner to have a problem with our "baby." We enjoyed camping for nearly 50 years, first in a tent then several popups, a hybrid, a travel trailer. In 2011 we decided to sell the trailer and truck. When the next spring came, we missed camping, so we bought our "Cozy Cabin." Now, we've decided to sell the teardrop, and all of our camping equipment.
