One of the benefits of wider ratio transmissions and many gears is they negate the requirement for multiple rear axle ratios.
1st gear example Old 4spd
Dodge 48RE 2.45 x 3.73 = 9.13 ; 2.45 x 4.10 = 10.045 ; 2.45 x 4.56 = 11.72
Ford 4R100 2.71 x 3.73 = 10.10 ; 2.71 x 4.10 = 11.11 ; 2.71 x 4.56 = 12.36
GM 4L80E 2.48 so similar to Dodge
New 6spd
Dodge Aisin 3.75 x 3.42 = 12.825 ; 3.75 x 3.73 = 13.99
Ford 6R140 3.97 x 3.42 = 13.58 ; 3.97 x 3.73 = 14.81
So you can see, even with a 3.42, the new 6spds have deeper gears than the old 4spds did even with 4.56!! The other aspect I love about the Ford 6sp is 4th is not 1:1, but 1.15:1 effectively making towing in direct like if you had a lower rear end turning that 3.42 into a 3.93
The 6r75 in my Expy is 4.17:1 1st and has 3.73 (standard on the EL) for a 1st gear crawl ratio of 15.55. It shifts out of 1st at 15mph. I love it! No worry about stalling going up a steep hill!
