Carrying extra lp tank

My rig is a Lexington B+ . For a long stay I have been carrying a extra 30 Lb. LP tank. I was towing a pickup but have since have gone to a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. I'm thinking of carrying the extra 20 or 30 lb. on a cargo carrier mounted on the receiver hitch of Jeep. What is the laws on this. Better to be out there, then inside the Jeep.
  • Mount it sideways on the back of the jeep and paint it like a aerial bomb;-) Sorry not much help.
  • As long as the valve is closed and you're not occupying the Jeep, I don't think there are any laws against carrying it inside the Jeep while it's being towed. I would certainly strap it down in the Jeep (or put it in a propane carrier mounted to the Jeep, if this will be normal operation for you).

As far as carrying it on an open deck rear hitch mounted carrier behind the Jeep, while being towed behind the motorhome... I would refrain, personally. In a rear end collision, that propane tank will be the first casualty. I do realize, this is not much different than carrying a Jerry can of gasoline on a spare tire rack mount on the back of the Jeep. I'm not a big fan of those either though.

As a member of the unfortunate club of folks who have escaped their burning vehicle and watched it burn down on the side of the highway, I'm a little more fire safety concious when it comes to things that can go BOOM! than some who haven't had the experience...
  • Sturdy mount for inside or out. The latches are an over center lever but I would probably fabricate/drill and make a secondary safety. Like putting a clip pin in a trailer tongue latch.
  • That might help if someone "rear ended" you and tried to run away.

Anyways, I've wondered the same when I was carrying a small tank in shower (of all places) when transporting. Often thought about carrying on rear bumper of small class C. But other side of coin is I've only ran out of propane one time. Even though I have a small tank, it last us a long time.

Anyway not even Ferrell gas covers your question.

  • I bought the exact mount that RJXJ put the link in and even bought it from the same site.

I can send you a pic if you like but I did weld a steel strap to each side of the lower base for support and I also cut the fastening straps slightly and added a lock to each one. That tank ain't never leaving the bed of my truck,EVER,LOL,unless I get hit by I dunno,,a surface to surface missle of some kid and then it won't matter will it?.LOL

I mounted mine in the bed of my truck along with two Military Jerry cans, one with gas and the other with diesel, cool huh?.We are boondockers and going fulltime in 4 weeks.

We actually carry 2 extra 30 pound tanks for 4 total and I re-did the 5er to hold the original 2 plus one spare and then bought the forklift brackets for the 4th one mounted in the truck bed.

I agree, get this bracket and mount it inside the Jeep in the rear or on the tail somewhere and painted as was suggested.
Only a fool will tail gate a gas powered vehicle sporting a propane pusher.........That's fire talk.
  • The back of my enclosed trailer contains 100 lbs of propane and 17 gallons of gasoline. If someone makes a mistake rear ending me, it may be the last mistake they make. Everything is secured to walls aft of the axles, so it takes a gross mistake on their part for rupture and ignition to occur.
  • I have a milk crate. great tight fit. have always carried it on back of trailer. it is bolted down, cant move.
