Class 5 Truck - Entry Step Solution

Here is something that may help other Eagle Cap owners (and possibly you great Host owners), whose TC's have the HSM Hickory step system that won't reach the ground...eliminates step-stools, etc.

After mounting our EC1165 on the F550 with Douglass body, the bottom step ended up being at 28" off the ground in our driveway with the entry-side rear wheels raised 3" for leveling. Since we boondock on unimproved, uneven ground mountain sites, this was realistic for design purposes - bottom step height adjustability (ie. Landing Gear) was also required.

Used the 3-step Little Giant for the temporary extra steps while measuring and looking at the myriad of options for more steps that would attach to the TC. Really wanted the TorkLift Revolution for all of the adjustability, but needed 7-step custom (which TL said they wouldn't make), and it was too thick anyway to tuck into the 17" available step storage space. The EC TC's have a support bar across the bottom of the space (photos of Host's that I have seen don't show that limitation). In spite off others saying they would be willing to cut out the bar...I decided I was not (possible structure support for the corner jack, would look cobbled up, wouldn't match driver's side rear wing, etc).

So what I ended up with is drilling out the rivets holding the bottom Hickory step and having a very stout bracket with inside dimension of 23-3/8" vs. the TL Stow-N-Glow bracket at 22-5/8". Friend with a lathe machined a couple of 3/8" aluminum spacers. Drilled a new 5/16" hole in the uppermost scissor-link of the 4-step Storage-N-Glow to match the 5/16" (rivet) hole in the Hickory step bracket and bolted it up. Decided to use bolts vs clevis pins to tighten it up and eliminate any wobble.

Very stable and it is easy to mount and unmount the steps. Am still searching for the slick way to eliminate the bolts, replacing with a lock for security without compromising the tight lockup...so far the closest possibility is the ABUS 82/70 Monobloc...

In the pics below, the bottom step is at 8" rise, and the remaining steps range 7.5-8.0". The transition spacing between the uppermost TL step to the 1st Hickory step is 3.5" vs. 1" on the rest of the TL steps, but it is not noticeable to me as I go up and down them. We'll see if my wife notices when she returns next week. There is room to reduce the space another 1-1.5" if desired.

I've got a design for an easily deployable lower hand rail for the TL step section if my wife wants - we'll see if it's necessary and I'll post if built...

Hickory 4-step retracted.

Hickory deployed - bottom step 28" off ground.

Bottom step folded up showing stout bracket metal below 3rd step.

The rivet to drill out - retains ability to restore it to OEM configuration in the future.

Stow-N-Glow upper link bolted up.

  • yblaw - - I'm laughing with you - our door kick plate ended up being 58.5" off the ground, top step is 50", bottom step was 28". The available storage "box opening " for the steps 27.875" x 16.875".

Ok, you just confirmed to me that the Host does not have the crosspiece limiting the bottom of the factory step storage area - that's what I thought I noticed in Host photos. Wish mine was like that so I could have gotten the extra 3" adjustability of the Revolution support bracket. But I also figured that I would want 7-step because my calls showed that a 6-step would leave the bottom step at 12.5" above ground (higher than I wanted for when my wife and I turn 80).

I was not interested in cutting that bottom bar out, even though I suspected it might have limited structural importance. But since I tend to be complete OCD, I called Eagle Cap to discuss with their engr - As you might guess, he was not anxious to advise, but did say it was probably not contributing much to the overall structure...but it is used to support the bottom of the Hickory step bracket, so it improves rigidity of those steps. When I wondered about losing some support structure on the nearby rear corner jack...he waffled a bit and admitted that he was unsure. I appreciated his straight up response and it confirmed my decision to not cut it out.

That's what led me to using the Stow-N-Glow, attaching to the factory bracket, getting a rock solid set of steps that are secure, and just being satisfied with taking them on/off - not a big deal when setting up camp. For quick stops while traveling, I have the option of putting on the steps (60 sec), or just using the Little Giant steps which are about 8.5" rise.
  • Jefe 4x4 - - I probably should have mentioned that my intent is to remove the 4-step Stow-N-Glow cassette each time I want to move, and store it in one of my compartments. Then I just fold the remaining 3 Hickory steps into the allotted factory space. Only takes about 60 sec to install or take them off the bracket (yesterday I got some SS wing nuts that spin on/off in 2 sec). Tried clevis pins which are also quick...but was dissatisfied that they don't lock up as tight as the bolts).

Yes, a little more hassle then just folding the steps up...but, neither you nor I want them hanging out the side of the camper 10" while going down the road. I wouldn't even leave them on the back of a TC going down the road as is shown on TL's website
  • That's a great entry step solution.......We had a similar issue with our Douglass-bodied Ram 5500, especially after we changed out the 32" tall 19.5 tires for 37" tall 22.5 tires/wheels. Our Host Mammoth is now a whopping 56" from the bottom of the entry door to the ground. We ended up removing the factory steps and replacing them with the Torklift Revolution setup like your's, except with 6 steps and the Torklift handrail. Works like a champ; easy to set-up, even on the road for bathroom breaks--pull the pin, lift the latch and pull the steps out. The difference is that Hosts are open across the bottom of the entry step mounting area, which allowed our 22" Torklift step setup to fit. I wonder if you could cut off the bottom of your step cutout without sacrificing any structural integrity on your Eagle Cap....Nice job!
  • I think this is a good solution to your step woe. What is the difference in height once you are on level ground and without the leveling block under the wheel? In other words, using it on a trip in a campground? Those equalizers will come in handy. How far does the folded up composite step rig stick out away from the TC at the curb level?

  • Thank you. Still need to use it in the field, but sure seems that it will work out great for the long haul. Certainly willing to let you try it out - we are in Evanston, WY (SW corner, 3 mi E of UT line on I-80. Send me a PM with contact info if you want to chat more about it.
  • Awesome mod............I would love to see and try that in person....Great job!
