I have a power solutions modification which when hooked up is suppose to fool the ems into thinking it is on generator instead of shore power, in other words, 50 amps. Useful when you need more power to operate both a/c units but when I started thinking about it, all power is going through one side or the other of the transfer switch, so no matter what, I will still only have 30 amps. Am I missing something about how this modification works?

30 is 30.If 30 is the llmiting factor, then that is all you get. Can't get more of than 30

If memory serves me correctly, you need to plug a second power cord into the service pedestal for the second A/C only. So yes, you still only have 30 amps for the rest of the coach, from your primary power cord.Richard

I have the Power solutions product. I have a 30 amp coach, but since my generator puts out a leg of 30 amps, and a leg of 20 amps, the Power Solutions product allows that same arrangement from using the electrical pedestal that usually has at least a 30 amp circuit and a 20 amp circuit, having 2 shore cords, the original 30 amp leg, and a second shore cord to plug into the 20 amp outlet on the pedestal. It works really well, but it is not 50 amps, because 50 amps is '2 legs of 50 amp'. This is neither 30 or 50. It is 2 legs, 1 leg of 30, and 1 leg of 20. Since one of my a/c's is already wired to the 20 amp leg of the generator, so by separating out that 20 amp leg, it allows both A/C's to run at the same time. 1 a/c on the 30 amp shore cord leg, another on the 20 amp shore cord leg.ON A 50 AMP COACH, I am assuming the arrangement is the same, only the 50 amp shore cord is plugged into the 30 amp pedestal (using the dogbone 50-30 amp adapter) and the 20 amp feed is separated out of the transfer switch to allow a 2nd shore cord to plug into the 20 amp service on the pedestal.

Now is that the device made by Power Soluti9ons RV (PSRV) if so you misunderstand how it works....PSRV (power solutions RV) was a comany that made a handy device which worked as follows.. Works great.. I built my own.On 50 amps (As I am now) I plug the outlet and into the inlet and all is good.IT does NOT "Trick" the EMS, the EMS just never powers the rear A/C.And power for the Rear A/C does NOT go thorugh the transfer switchOh yes when you plug into 30 amps via an adapter.. Power is split between the two 50 amp HOT solenoids in the ATS, but the NEUTRAL carries all the current.

No fooling the EMS or anybody else for that matter.
Most of the genset's are 5.5KW (45amps@120v) with a 30amp breaker for the coach and a 20amp breaker for the rear a/c ONLY. All one is doing with this setup is splitting the 20amp circuit with a plug and receptacle and so that you can unplug the cord and re-plug it into a separate power source on the pedestal for the rear a/c and thereby giving you a total of 45amps or so of total power, as in having a full 30amps for the coach, minus the rear ac unit.

correct. the picture is shown when not using the 2nd shore cord, or when using the generator.

kmb1966, your picture looks like my ps but with the cord plugged in the way your picture shows, it would not be in use unless you unplug it and plug in and outside power source. Thank you for the picture. RLS7201 thank you for your pictures also. Excellent information.

Hello wa8yxm. Yes, it is the Power Solutions device which requires you to plug a second power cord into the service pedestal. I installed it about 7 years ago. However, after a year of using it in Texas, I had a problem with our automatic electrical transfer switch which resulted in it needing replacement. Since I don't know what caused the transfer switch to fail, I was concerned it might have been the Power Solutions which caused it, thus, my question at the start of this thread. We now spend our hot summers in Colorado and have not used it for the last 5 years.

But is your "Modification" the Power Solutions (PSRV) device> (outlet and inlet with breaker?) Just wondering. Would like to see a photo of the inlet without the the pigtail plugged onto it.
