Cost of partial paint job

I have a 1994 F250 in otherwise cherry condition, but the paint on the hood and roof is looking thin. About how much might it cost to get those parts painted? And would such a paint job normally include clear coat? Should I go to a auto paint shop or a body shop for such a small job?

Thanks, Pete
  • You could also look into a body wrap for your truck. The wrap can be anything from mild to wild and typically less than a paint job. Maybe you will want a carbon fiber wrapped hood with some lighter colored wrap over the cab? I know the wraps will last 5 years, but don't know how well they wear beyond that.
  • If they are not peeling, dented or rusted and just a scuff and shoot, then you could get it done pretty reasonably. I'd find a small body shop or Maaco type place to do this kind of work.
No it won't match perfectly and if the tops of the fenders are faded then it won't be a good looking or straight forward.
I always liked the old trucks with the white cabs. Maybe a good option if it works with your truck.
Clear coat vs single stage paint is just a cost/longevity thing.
Single stage paint is cheaper and will last a long time if quality paint. If your planning on another 20 years out of it then go base/clear.
  • You might check with your local technical school/college. We've had several paint jobs done by the local Vo-Tech school, and they were outstanding. We had a hood repainted due to some rust and they matched the paint perfectly, and we had the fiberglass dually fenders repaired and repainted, and again the results were outstanding.

You only pay for the supplies, no labor charges. To me it's a win/win situation. Of course you could end up with mess too. :) We paid about $300 for our hood, and around the same amount to get our fenders repaired and painted.
  • It really depends on your expectation. If you just want it to be close then sure, just repaint the hood and roof...if you want it like new then repaint the entire truck.

Quotes and rates and quality vary from shop to shop...take your time and shop around and you will get a good job at a fair price.

Around here repaint prices are all over the place ranging from $500 cheapies to $6,000 plus for nicer jobs.

    Thanks!

  • hood and roof is NOT a small job... 2 of the hardest to refinish...
people can not hover.. and truck not being disassembled... can not use a rotisserie

get the complete truck repainted.. paint can not be matched that old.. close yes.. but in a year or 2.. you will see a large difference..

new paint age slowly.. old paint age quicker... the difference..

get lots of quotes... and references... it matters.
  • I don't know how much it would cost, but I would just take it to several paint shops and get estimates for the job. I myself would get the whole truck painted since the new paint probably would not match the old paint due to age. JMO
