Def fluid in new Ram

Around 3%, when towing. Less when empty. Mine started out MUCH higher. Took it back in, and they recalibrated something, and mine now comes in right at the 3% towing at 28k.

I just refilled mine and had carefully noted when I did the last refill. I traveled 5,000 miles and added 2.5 gallons. About 30% of the mileage was towing my 5er. So 2,000 mpg in mixed driving.

I have a Ford but I would expect similar DEF mpg for other brands.

Typical DEF consumption will range between 1% and 3% of fuel burn. So for every 100 gallons of diesel you burn, expect to burn between 1 and 3 gallons of DEF. Depends on duty cycle and a few other factors. For my truck, I've only hauled stuff, driven 70% in the city and gone for a few road trips here and there. I'm averaging 1.4% of fuel to DEF burn.

This is not just a Ram thing, it's a ALL brand thing. The question is does Ford and GM tell their customers this or would they prefer them to us an off brand fluid and then charge their customer for the repair?

Hey Perrysburg, Are you aware that DEF is only roughly 30% Aqueous ammonia? The remaining 70% is distilled de-mineralized water. The contamination problem only occurs if the concentration of ammonia falls below a certain threshold or if some sort of mineral (particularly salt) somehow makes it into the tank.

Crystal formation is actually perfectly normal for all DEF. you can experiment by buying a small jug of mopar and some DEF (ISO certified of course) from any other store. Take a paper towel and poor a little def on both and leave it in the sun. Or better yet, find something black that you don't care about and pour some def onto both sides and let it dry in the sun. You will quickly see the white crystal formation out there once it dries. Crystal formation doesn't mean diddly and I would refute that. Now crystal formation in the fuel system (caused by one mistakenly pouring DEF into the fuel tank) is a serious issue and something that will not be covered by a dealership. In fact, the standard test for checking for DEF contamination in fuel systems is to take the fuel filter out and let it dry. If crystals form while drying, they know you poured DEF into the fuel system.

OMG people, the dealership won't give a rats red behind because Mopar AKA FCA will be paying for any damage not the dealership! SMFH

Also maybe some of you don't know but unless noted ALL Mopar parts and Accessories are covered under a three year no mileage warranty. Some have a lifetime warranty!

What is that jug of DEF @ Wallmart going to cost you if your truck ends up with a DEF tank issue and the dealer finds crystals in the tank and injector? Think Wallyworld is going to come to your rescue and pay that repair bill?

Buy what you want just understand the risks of going cheap! Start checking around and you will quickly find this is a bigger issue than most of you think it is.

If you buy DEF in a jug just watch the expiration dates.

Could you supply a picture of an expiration date on a label on a jug of DEF ????? I have yet to see an expiration date stated on a label. Have seen label dates at Walmart, don't know if thats when they received it or if it was manufactured on that date, but never any mention of expiration .

Here's what I'm talking about. On each jug, somewhere there should be a date stamped like on this jug of DEF I got from the dealer the day I picked up my new truck.

I too was waaaay over charged for my DEF! I was charged just under $63,000 for just one gallon. They did however throw in a 2015 RAM 3500 Laramie HO 385 hp Aisin trans with rear air suspension for "free". :B

Ha, made me chuckle. I'm at 12,000 miles with my 2015 3500 RC SRW 4x4 w/Aisin and I love it. Carried four big bags of txi sand to help finish a local playcenter in the bed which is a load I'd previously I'd have needed my dually to be legal with. And yup, hard know the skid steer is back there, once we get the pintle fixed on the 122SD dump then it can tow the backhoe and the F450 will be relegated purely for twice a year 5th wheel duty with the family.

The dealer is saying that because he/she wants you to buy it fromthem, because they mark it up and make a bigger profit than other resellers.... same as with ANY part that the dealer sells.... especially wiper blades, oil filter, air cleaners, etc.
