Extra spare tire

Two spares for me. Cheap insurance, considering what we spend for our trailers and trips.

We often stay on the water all day Sunday and leave for home at 6 pm , and drive at night coming home .
I bought the more expensive LT tires with a 2271 # weight rating graded on the LT scale . They replaced 1760 # rated tires on the ST scale .
Count me lucky as I have never had a failure of any kind because my boat trailer tires are so stout that they are never taxed even in 115 degree heat that sometimes happens on the Delta .
I did a similar thing for my travel trailer which came with 1820 # ST rated tires and I replaced with LT tires of an 2271 # rating .
My 21T komfort trailer came with a spare mounted under the frame just in front of the TT axles , but it has never been used either .
The TT has also been used in 115 degree heat in the CA and AZ deserts .
LT tires do carry a heavy price premium over the same size ST tires so I needed to make sure that my reserve capacity was significant .
As to the weight of a spare , the LT tires can each weigh 10 - 20 % more than the same sized ST tire .

Before I spent $650 on wheels and tires, I spent a lot of time researching. I would have gone the LT route, if there was a better choice than the Kumho tire in my size. I could possibly go to a 15", but would be too close to minimum clearances. So, in (hopefully) 4 or 5 years, I'll revisit the whole thing.

As long as only one actually blows up, it's no problem. As long as you can get the trailer to a tire store, you're good. Just replace both there.

One trip I'd want a second tire would be going to Alaska.

Some fifth wheels have them mounted underneath, just behind the front jacks.

Hope this isn't too much of a thread-jack but might fit the topic: What do you some of you guys use for a spare tire carrier? I've been stowing my spare inside the TT when underway and I'd like to mount it outside.

I have a welder and steel so if anyone has a good plan or design and can post a link, I'd be a more happy camper. TIA

I was one of those folks who had 2 flats in about a 20 mile span. Fortunately my friend was behind me pulling his trailer and he did carry two spares. We did stop just down the road and they didn't have any replacements. So now I do carry 2 spares for the trailer. In 5 years since I have not needed either. I will continue to carry two.

I always have 2 spare tires for my TT. The extra spare takes up little room and well worth it for peace of mind. Several times I had a blowout and only the spare to get me to the closest tire place which was closed. I do not like to travel without a spare in the middle of nowhere after a blowout. IMHO if traveling a long distance and late in the evening two spare tires are better than one. I have towed TT,5th w,
for over 55 years and the extra spare came in handy
