F150 charge relay, fuse

I'm going to be helping a neighbor get his 2005 (w/tow pkg) ready for towing. The brake controller pigtail in his glovebox came with a relay and maybe a fuse. Lots of Youtube vids but none specific to 2005. Anyone know where the relay goes and whether or not we need to install a fuse (and where)?

Thanks in advance,
Scott

Owners manual should have a picture and listing of each fuse and relay in the fuse boxes in the truck. Likely the brake controller and towing ones might be marked "optional". Glad on my 2008 Explorer all I had to do was buy a connecting harness. My 1998 Expedition had a brake controller pigtail package I never used.
  • Can't help specifically, because it's been a while, but I recall installing brake controllers in a 2005, 2006 and 2008 F150 and it was pretty much plug n play.
I don't recall installing fuses or relays, but the fuse box lid/owners manual should say where those parts get plugged in if needed.

May have even had instructions with it.
Quick search, E trailer says plug n play. Splice pigtail to controller , plug in under dash, done.
  • No manual. Was hoping someone here had "been there, done that".
  • Thanks Mitch. I looked at several sites on-line that promised owners manual content and never delivered. The one you provided worked.
I need Fuse 106 @ 30a and the relay goes in R05 - both in passenger kick panel fuse box.

  • glad you found it, I have that f150 out in the barn. just turned 40k. and the book is in the door. I do remember a harness and relay. think there in the glove box.
  • The brake controler will work with out the supplied relay. IT is actually for charging the trailer battery. On a 2005, the relay may go in the fuse box under the hood. It did on my 2004
