A guy we camp with twice a year has a V10 and a mid to large size travel trailer. I asked him what his mileage is like. He said 6-8. I said how about when you are not towing? He said 6-8. He is a Nascar fan and drives accordingly.
Wow! V10s aren't known for fuel economy but if he's getting 6-8mpg EMPTY I think it's time to investigate to see if something's going on sapping his MPG. I assume no CE lights are on.
Now, if it's lifted on 37"s and he drives Nascar-esque then there's no mystery to solve, but on stock suspension and rubber 6-8 seems really poor even if he gets his foot into it.
I drive normal on my 37's. I get an average of 9.5-10 unloaded and with our old 5'er, I got an average of 6. It's the nature of the beast, I knew my mileage would go down, but I'm a fanatic about having a truck look the way I want it.

Not towing, straight-highway, moderate speed I can get 14-15. Average is more like 12-14
When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.

Now that I have 4.56 gears, deer-proof bumpers, duals, and a full safari rack I get more like 12-13 hwy and 10 in town.
Towing I get 7-10 (depending on load and speed), but when I had the 3.73 gears it would be more like 6-8.
But.... Gas is cheap, and the V10 is a very durable motor that needs few repairs, and maintenance is cheap if you are willing to spend a few hours in the driveway every 100,000 miles.
