Four Wheel Drive

What is entailed in a four wheel drive service? My truck gave me this message the other day.
  • On mine it was a simple switch that would have been 200 bucks. I would say you need to hook it to a scanner and find out what code you get to know the true cost. 200 bucks to 1500 bucks is the amount likely needed to fix.

  • If it is a GM like my old '04 Tahoe that had the same message, it does NOT mean its time for scheduled maintenance, like transfer case fluid replacement...far from it. It means take it to the dealer for replacement of the transfer case actuator or replacement of the 2WD/4WD/AWD switches on the dash. Hope this helps.
  • Depends on which vehicle...even what year

Range of types of 4x4 initiation: Vacuum, heated liquid to vapor,
    motor, solenoid, etc

Then whether the issue is in the front pumpkin (above mechanisms) or
    in the transfer case

Transfer case then has full time, part time, viscous coupling, open diff, etc
Or whether manual or automatic transfer case actuation (automatic has computerized
motors and on mine the shop manual says 4 hours tech time to dial in any replacement
    motor assembly)

Could even be the dash switches...they are interlocked to prevent
messing up compound low and/or switching to 4x4 above a certain speed, etc...etc

It depends on which type of 4x4 system you have...
  • Probably t case fluid and front diff fluid.
Not to hard on most and not too$$$. Usually a couple litres each or less.
  • My AWD system service includes a drain & refill of rear differential and front transfer case.

    What he said.
I don't know about the rest of the members but my crystal ball was lost to a hurricane several years ago.

By the way, this is NOT a 5th wheel topic. Should be in tow vehicles.
  • Sometimes a bad sensor or solenoid that detects what range you are in.
