Fridge, hot water, gas won’t stay lit

Our son purchased a 2005 Keystone Hornet Sport trailer and my husband went to help him de-winterize it today. The furnace burner works but the hot water and fridge burners won’t stay on. It lights but then it fails. Any ideas or suggestions? They are supposed to go camping this coming weekend. Help!
  • Keep working on lighting them, the lines to them need to be purged. After 5-6 tries they should stay lite.
  • Get the stove burners working first. High draw, easy to see. Listen for the propane.
  • Thank you Boon Docker. My son reports after 8 tries it seems to be staying lit, both fridge and hot water heater. I’m happy because I was worried about him buying an older trailer. Thanks again!

Next time, light the cooktop first. That will ensure most of the air is clear and propane is flowing.
  • When propane system is shutdown one needs to establish flow and pressure throughout the whole system....
After SLOWLY opening the propane cylinder valve light off the stove top burners ...ALL on high and let them burn for 30 seconds
This places a demand on the LP Main Reg and helps establish flow

Then light off fridge/water heater/furnace in sequence (closest to LP Reg to farthest one)
Can take several attempts to light/stay lit because unlike the stove top burners the fridge/water heater/furnace use flame proving to keep gas valve open

Good to hear that it was not a major problem.
  • Something else to watch.
Paper wasps love to take up residence in the Propane orifice, especially trailers that sit.
    Hope the issue was resolved.

This is exactly what my hubby does each time. He first lights the stove, all the burners, to get the propane through the lines, then he lights the oven, the fridge, then the water heater. We learned early on if we try to light the fridge first alone, it shuts off. So we follow that pattern each time, before every trip.

Yes! Been there, done that, so now we have a mesh covering.
