Front hitch weight capacity?

I have an aluminum tool box mounted on a front hitch on an F350. Do you think it is OK to put 275 pounds in the tool box? I was wondering what the weight limits are for the front hitch.

Thanks
  • It would be best to refer to the manufacturers info on the hitch, if you know who made it and can access the info.

That said, mine was rated at 500 tongue weight, similar to a class III rear hitch. That was with four mounting bolts used on each side. Too bad when I hit a deer the body shop only saw fit to replace three of them, since they aren't an easy install.
  • I pay attention to my front axel GW limit (4400#) when attaching stuff to my front hitch.
  • That 1 ton Chevy sure does have a low front axle rating.
My trucks front axle rating is 5940lbs.
I have a Curt front hitch that is rated 500lbs tongue, 5000lbs trailer.
My front basket is rated to 500lbs.
I carry a 2000 Honda, 6 gallons of water and 5 gallons of gas. Counting the basket weight, that is about 200lbs.
My front axle weight with the basket full, camper on and 4500lb boat in tow is 4550lbs, that gives me 1390lbs of front axle capacity left over.
  • I believe my curt front hitch was rated at 500 pounds also. I carry my Eu3000 honda generator and 8 gallons of water on it + a few other odds and ends. The cargo rack probably weights about 80 pounds, so I am guessing about 300 pounds. When loaded on the front it reduces my rear axle weight by about 150 pds. Which for me is a good thing.

500 lbs. would likely be the minimum rating for a 2" receiver.

    Do you mean max?

    Do you mean max?

I suppose both, comment was meant to state that there is likely no 2" receiver with a rating less than 500, so, minimum entry level hitch.
