Fueling a diesel truck
When I add fuel to our new to us diesel truck at our local Shell station the stations diesel fuel pump is "very" slow, the regular gasoline pumps are working ok. Is it normal for the diesel pumps at fuel stations to run slow?

- Diesel pumps do not have the vapor recovery mechanism use for gasoline and this speeds up the filling considerably at every gas station where I have added diesel to my truck. The truck stop pumps are 2-3 times as fast but the gas station diesel pumps are still twice as fast as the pumps with gasoline.
As others have mentioned there is likely a problem with the filters and with biodiesel and cold weather you have a great condition for fuel gelling. jspence1 wrote:

I had a similar problem at a Shell station near my home. The diesel was flowing at about one gallon per minute. I told the clerk and his response was that it was a known issue. I tried it again several weeks later and it hadn't changed. I wonder what's growing in their pump, tank and filters.

I think I'd follow the same practice for fuel pump nozzles as I do with gun barrels - Muzzle Control. I am not pointing the business end toward my face for any reason!
I really doubt it was the filter-
Next time it happens simply blow into the nozzle a few times- It is very likely the sensor in the nozzle was causing the slow fill-john&bet wrote:
The actual pumps are in the ground. One pump supplies all. Where the hoses attach is just a dispenser and meter.
I run into that problem at a station at I-65 and US-50 when there was two of us fueling at the same pump,opposite sides.It was because one pump supplied both nozzles with a separate meter for each nozzle. Guess it saved money on installation and electric bill. Just guessing on that part.- Love the loves and flying j fuel stops. Super easy with trailer on to go through the truck bays. Always clean and no overfill from the high volume pump I've seen. I did once have a kid tell me I couldn't use the truck lane since I didn't have a class A. Must have been a newb.
- Best to stay away from stations with pump problems. Find a high volume station servicing trucks. Your chances of getting good clean diesel are much better there and they maintain their pumps. Diesel is their bread and butter.
- I agree with those saying the filter needs changing, but the owner says why spend the 10 or 20 bucks for a new filter while it is still pumping.
- Could it have been cold out? And the fuel was just getting thick. When pumps are slow in the cold its a good sign fuel isn't treated with antigel.

- On a similar topic, with all the diesel cars coming to market now I'm seeing our local fuel service stations (I use WaWa) have changed their pumps over to both fuels. What I mean is at every pumping island there is a choice for diesel or gasoline. It's up to you to press the correct fuel button and hose. Here in Jersey diesel is self serve but gasoline is not. I'm sure there will be a rise in folks fueling up their diesel cars with gasoline. I see them busy talking and texting on their devices. One day they will come out with a nozzle that only fits gasoline and one that only fits diesel.
