Instead of asking small bits and pieces which could be taken with wrong contexts, I've decided to post our potential plan. Hopefully you guys can tell me if this will work or not.I'll get the budget out of the way first. We plan to spend around US$200-$250k total. May be US$300k if absolutely necessary. Our current plan is to get a used 40-43ft Diesel MH and a toad.I operate a business on internet. As long as I have an internet connection, I can work. Doesn't even need to be fast. My wife will be retired by the time we start full-timing. When we do work, we will use lots of power.My wife wants this kind of lifestyle (I'm happy when she is happy! :)- We love hiking. We plan to visit as many national parks as we can.- We will travel across USA and Canada often. This setup needs to be comfortable to drive and living in.- She likes the quietness. Sleeping within the park is preferable to RV parks but we understand that most of the national park camp grounds are small and primitive. A TT won't fit there, but a truck camper might.- We do need internet at least once every few days. We cannot park within parks for weeks with no internet.- We will probably move TT once a month or so. Lots of little traveling with the camper, possibly sleeping there one or two days at a time before coming back "home" to the TT.This is the setup I'm thinking as an alternative to DMH + toad:- a new 1t diesel pickup. May be slightly used. NOT dually. No current preference towards Ford/GM/Ram. Probably will end up taking one with the best payload/towing capacity. It will be fully optioned out.- a camper that is 1ft+ shorter than the bed of the truck.- aux tank in the bed of the truck, with a pump.- lithium battery bank (going to be quite large), probably in bed, somehow secured.- solar panels, as much as we can fit on top of the camper.- when the truck is moving, I'd like to have the alternator charge these lithium batteries.- probably a 12v fridge. Don't need huge capacity here.- must be able to sit comfortably for hours at a time when we do need to work.- a TT to be built by Space Craft Mft. I talked to them already during the RV show so I know this is feasible. Will probably weigh around 6klb dry.- around 27-28ft. light but not to the point of compromising strength.- 3 slides. diesel based heating and generator. Smaller lithium battery bank and some solar here as well to top off those batteries when we are away from the TT.- big TV, sat receiver, mobile internet/WiFi amp.- washer/dryer in one. residential fridge.When the two are connected and when we are in the TT, the battery system will be shared. The TT will be parked often in RV parks where the full service is available.

Buncha custom stuff that no one else wants will just be expensive and not worth much when if you need to sell. Get the DP and a toad, or Super C and a toad. You could actually get a super C toyhauler and put a little toad inside it. That would be cool and practical! And yo could launch it like Knighr Rider out th back!Or a dually and a big TC, or a pickup and fiver. Could do toy hauler with this combo too and have a 2nd vehicle.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you are planning for a big lifestyle change. Many have done this and many have attempted and then went home. You are smart for taking the time to review and weigh options. But, be careful about wearing out the guys and gals here that can really give you good advice. Like the kid at the family gathering that just keeps asking and asking questions. Don't withhold information so we can be more pinpoint with our answers. Try to focus more, too and read and look up other posts.

A couple of things that you have shared. Most National Parks won't accommodate a MH the size you are considering, period. Nor long Travel Trailers or 5 Wheels. As has been shared. Your best choices will be state parks and Corps of Engineer sites. But some of these are not open all year, as well as National Parks. As well as you will have length restrictions to traverse some Parks, Zion and Devils Tower come to mind. So maybe a little fine tuning of exactly what your goals are and work from there? Seems like you are building the boat first, before you really determine what pond you are going to be sailing in.

As for fuel, I agree with the earlier post in that what you are describing is not necessary unless you want to get fuel in one state traverse another, to save $$. So, spend $$ to transport additional fuel and sacrifice payload capacity? Remember, if you are full timing you need to carry stuff for 4 seasons, as there is no home or apartment to go back to. Where you plan on camping and traveling, you will have accessible fuel available, albeit at a higher rate.

Hopefully you will narrow down your choices and dreaming without wearing everyone out trying to help you.

I really don't want to get a DRW and based on my research, a new SRW, properly equipped, can approach 4k lb in payload. That should be plenty given that I will go for a very light camper. Max I will go is 2.5k loaded on the camper, so the base weight would be 2k or less. Torklift stuff is a useful info, thanks. :)

We've been tent camping for years, so even a small camper is a huge upgrade for us. And both of us are rather small, measuring at 5'5" and 5'2". Given what we want to use it for, I think it will be fine even with a small camper, especially given that we have a bigger TT to go to when we need it.

In fact, my DW can't drive so that was a minus on DMH+toad route. I like the fact that this setup has only one engine. And two living quarters is a plus for us, not minus. A big one for comfort and a small one that can fit anywhere, including small camp sites.

Our initial plan was to leave the DMH at near-by RV sites outside of national parks and car/tent camp inside when we feel like doing it. This is a huge upgrade from that.

Looked at those already and they are my leading candidate for in-bed tanks. I don't want to go with the replacement types because there's no way to get fuel out of those (please prove me wrong - I would be very happy because it simplifies things!)

Looks interesting. They have pop-up campers - how do they perform below freezing temperatures? Pop-up trailers in general s*cks in these conditions...

I thought about this too. But at the end of the day, my truck won't have much customization. My camper doesn't need much either if I can place the aux tank and the batteries in the bed. So the only customization is the TT and I think its worth it because we haven't found a single one that we like yet. We are looking for a TT with much of what Class A offers without the engine in a more compact package.

This was our #1 choice until this... The problem with this approach (for us) is that my DW will want to camp inside national parks. That means driving only the toad and our backpack trip gear - tiny tents, cold nights, long distance to washrooms. Despite these inconveniences, she likes camp fires and the surrounding environments. A slightly compromised but compact setup like this (or a small Class B) works well here. We are only looking for a camper with a wet bath and small holding tanks. Should be quite light.

Dually is no good. We need to come back to Ontario 5 months per year to keep our health care going and driving duallies in Toronto downtown is going to be awful, especially in long bed form. Our theme here is a small truck, small camper and a largish comfy TT.

I guess this is more for the peace of mind. Perhaps I am scared to drive the TT into the gas station. :) Or boondock longer than I had planned. Just trying to be (perhaps over) cautious.

We are power users. I've used the Excel load calculation worksheet and it works out to be more than 300Ah per day if we do everything we want to do. Things seems to accumulate fast when you list every single potential power consuming devices. We will go with the lithium batteries and I have been following the progress of them used in RVs for the past two years by various RVers. And since most of the batteries are on the truck, I will need to max out solar panels on top of the camper's roof. I'm not going with the generator on the camper but there will be a diesel one on the TT. This setup is also nice since this gives us the option of taking our truck out (where cell signal is strong) and work for extended time without moving it with all that available power.

We like the fact that we have the option of having two homes - a small one that is barely sufficient but can go anywhere (but with lots of battery power) and a big one that is usually hooked up or driven by a quiet/efficient but powerful diesel generator with plenty of fuel stored in the truck bed.
