Getting rid of all the dust and such in an old camper?

Ok, so I've pulled my 88 Lance CL980 out of storage, and I'm slowly working on cleaning it up. I've wiped down most of the interior, but I noticed that I'm still sneezing quite a bit when I'm in the camper. Are there any products or procedures for getting rid of the dust? I have only vaccuumed the sofa bed and queen bed, but I'm wondering if shampooing is going to be necessary to get all the dust out?

Any thoughts or help is appreciated.

Scott
  • Wash every surface with a good disinfectant mix, remove all cloth from the unit for steam cleaning or washing machine. Open all vents, wear dust mask as prescribed by others, change out your wash water frequently.

    Ditto.

BLowing stuff around is just going to make a bigger mess.

    Vacuum it up.

Hey Scott, Don't forget the Simple Green! Personally, I swear by it, but that's just me! Oh, hey! I believe I saw your truck/camper on Friday off of 5 points parked on the street when I headed over to Agua Fria.. ?

    Have "fun" cleaning! ;)

I'm sure that was me, and you've found where I live ;) The camper is on the truck right now as I clean it up. Still trying to decide how I want to store it while it's off the truck.

Simple green is a great idea....
  • Also, consider mounting a fan in a window.to draw the dust out while you're working.
It does a good job when sanding drywall. Seal the fan to the window opening.
  • Suck it out, I would not blow it. Blowing will never get the dust out just move it around. A vacuum with a Hepa filter is great, or set your vacuum outside with a long hose so all the tiny particles are vented out. Open all the windows and vents. If you have power vents crank them up full to pull out the air. Remove mattresses and cushions, vacuum and let air out. Cleaning the cushions will also help with a shampooer. Wash all surfaces, if you have a fabric ceiling vacuum this as well (hard to shampoo but will make a nice change if you can), I use pet odor shampoo and it leaves a nice fresh sent.

Wear a quality dust mask. It may not only be dust you're getting in your lungs. Any camper that's been sitting vacant for awhile may have rodent droppings, insect carcassas and a myriad of other air borne things floating around.

After donning your hazmat suit, use a high powered leaf blower to get the particles out of the hidden places and out in the open. Liberally spray Pledge or similar over every surface, and wipe changing your rag frequently. Remove anything that can be washed in the machine and wash it well. Finish with Febrez and spray liberally and wipe it clean. Rent/Buy a rug shampooer to clean any carpeted areas.

Another easier trick is to call a mobile detailer and let them do the job for you...:W....Dennis

    Thanks Dennis,
I've started the cleaning process, but you are correct I probably need to blow it out, and get in all the crevices with a good cleaner... As far as mice droppings, I've gone through the whole camper, with no signs of droppings...

Use Olde English or similar on the cabinets.
