GM to cut powertrain warranty to 60,000 miles

I just bought a new 2015 Chevy. The 100,000 mile warranty was important to me, when I compared GM to Chrysler (Jeep Cherokee) and Ford (Explorer) with their shorter warranties of 60,000 miles. It was part of my decision.

In view of this news, glad I bought the 2015 GM, when I did.

BTW, I found both the Jeep Cherokee (3.2 V6) and Ford Explorer (3.5 V6) excellent vehicles, when I tested them. I would of been happy to have either the Jeep or the Ford.

My experience test driving new vehicles from GM, Ford and Chrysler demonstrated very clearly to me, just how good new vehicles from these three companies are nowadays.

I wasn't interested in testing other manufacturers vehicles, as have found that the domestic manufacturers' vehicles generally have more comfort, leg and shoulder room for larger guys, with bad 'hockey' knees like myself. :D

Over in Spokane the GMC dealer gives a lifetime warranty.

Almost Ditto.

I like the GMC Terrain.

Seriously considered the Jeep Cherokee, but they appear to continue having some problems with the 9 speed auto tranny. Didn't want the headache if problems occurred.

The kid in me almost went with the Jeep Unlimited. The Terrain turns out to be a good fit.

What they are really saying is the cost of repairs between 60,000 and 100,000 miles exceeds the profit from additional sales that longer warranty generates. To me, that signifies they have a lot of claims falling in that window. If they didn't, they would have no reason to shorten the warranty. Powertrain repairs can be very expensive, we aren't talking about things like a balky power window that would be covered by a bumper to bumper plan. Since I drive around 25,000 miles per year, that is effectively taking a year and a half's worth of coverage away from me. GM is really trying to move me to another manufacturer. BTW, my last 4 vehicles have all been GM and the only claim I can think of that would fall under the cancelled warranty was a starter that went out on one of my trucks. But I like the thought that if someone big was to go really bad, I would have coverage. Doubt they will lower the price to compensate for lower warranty claims costs. GM is really trying to steer me to a competitor.

UH-OH! Lets see what else gets cut in the next year. this is usually a sign that bad things are ahead!

I do not understand this. It will save GM some money, but it seems like a poor marketing move.

Seems like as stiff as the competition is these days they wouldn't be looking to pull existing selling features away from consumers. Especially with the way Ram is gaining market share they need all they can to persuade consumers to buy GM. I hope they change their mind.

Also, I wonder if the Duramax engine will maintain its 100,000 mile coverage.

And to do this after all of last years recalls! I'm a Chevy fan but a move like that almost says to consumers they don't have confidence in their vehicles after 60,000 miles.

Bad marketing for sure.
