Good Camping areas in Sedona

We are heading down to Sedona about mid Oct and wanting to see if you guys have some good areas to camp? Is there anything that is a must do as we have never been? We will be traveling as the family of 4 with our two young boys.

Thanks
  • There's also a dump station at the Giant gas station in Cottonwood. I don't know of any other in Sedona. Perhaps the forest service campgrounds in Oak Creek Canyon (89A) would have a hard time making a dump station so close to the creek. You might ask about it at the Red Rock Ranger Station.
  • Has anyone discovered any dump stations in Sedona besides the one in Rancho Sedona? I've scoured the area, but can't seem to locate one. I know about Deadhorse, but we're staying in Sedona on this trip.

Honestly, I'm surprised that not even one of the campgrounds along 89A have added a dump station. Any assistance you can provide is appreciated.
  • Helicopter tour as mentioned will give you awesome perspective. Pink Jeep Broken Arrow tour seems to be the most popular jeep tour. There are several Indian Ruins around the area....Montezuma Castle and Well, Tuzigoot, Palatki, V-Bar-V petroglyphs, etc. Take a picnic to Red Rock Crossing. Drive up Oak Creek Canyon visiting Slide Rock State Park. Currently all forest service recreation sites are closed in OCC due to fire earlier this summer, but hopefully they will reopen soon. You can still drive through the canyon....it's beautiful. Visit Chapel of the Holy Cross, architectural and scenic wonder.

There is Verde Valley Railroad in Clarkdale. A nice train ride, but IMO not as good as Durango-Silverton. Visit the town of Jerome, old mining town turned arsty, built on the side of the mountain. If you go, be sure to see the Audrey Headframe Park which has a mine shaft that you can stand on glass and look down.

Eat at Cowboy Club....treat the boys to Cactus Fries and Rattlesnake Bites! Breakfast at Coffee Pot Restaurant. Dahl & DiLuca for nice Italian dining. There are plenty of other restaurants in Sedona and Cottonwood though.

Well, that should keep you busy for awhile! Have fun!
  • Great thanks for the info. I think we might try to stay at the Dead Horse state park. What are some good things to do around the Sedona area? Must eat places?

    Thanks
  • If you are looking for a nice campground with great views of the red rocks Verde Valley RV resort is very nice with club house and many activities....it's part of Thousand Trails campgrounds but you can stay there without being members!!! http://www.ttverdevalley.com
  • Do the helicopter tour FIRST. We waited until our last day to do it and realized all we had missed by not knowing the area. $60 each and well worth it.
    Enjoy it's a beautiful area.
  • We enjoyed Dead Horse Ranch S.P. several years back. It is located near Cottonwood so not a long drive to Sedona. When in the area, make a trip up the mountain to Jerome. If you can, go early in the day. When we went with our truck camper we had trouble finding a parking spot and had to park along a road and walk a fair way to get to the hub of things. We enjoyed the area and took a Pink Jeep tour while at Sedona. Check with the C of C or Visitor Center for discount coupons for the area.
  • Oak Creek Canyon is my go to choice if I can get in, hopefully it will reopen soon
  • October is a great time to visit Sedona. Rancho Sedona RV Park is the only full hookup campground in Sedona. It's kinda pricey, but a nice setting by the creek. There are a few USFS campgrounds up Hwy 89A in Oak Creek Canyon, but they are still temporarily closed since the Slide Fire at the beginning of the summer. Don't know when they'll open, so you might want to keep checking online. About 15 miles away is Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood. Many people like this park. It has two fishing lagoons and a few hiking trails. There are things to see all around the Verde Valley, so staying in Cottonwood is not a bad choice. For boondocking, you can stay off FR 525 and FR 89B, between Sedona and Cottonwood.
