Grand Design Pricing

I was browsing Grand Design travel trailers on RV Trader and I saw one dealer who stated that due to agreements with the manufacturer they can only advertise MSRP and that we should call to get their discount price. Is that true? Does Grand Design restrict all dealers that way? Are the dealers offering 25 to 30% off MSRP for Grand Design like they do with most brands or is Grand Design different?

I have never seen a GD advertised for 30% off MSRP. Incidentally you can build and price a GD on their web site. Same MSRP for everyone. As long as I can remember GD doesn't allow it's selling dealers to show discounted pricing. IMO thats how they keep the prices up. It's pretty easy to hit RVtrader and see the lowest prices somewhere in the country and use that as a bargaining tool. Not so with GD. There may be a rogue dealer that shows a lower price but it's rare to see 25-30% off advertised. I've got 3 GD dealers near me and none show lower prices. They will show lower prices on other brands though.
We were casually shopping fifth wheels in the spring and I had my sights set on Grand Design Reflection series. We went in all of the models that our local dealer - General RV had. We then went to an RV show, and a lot of other local dealers and looked at Jayco, Open Range, and a few others. Nothing I saw that fit our budget/desired floorplan compared to GD.

So about a month later, I called my salesman who was a really low pressure guy to see if they had a GD 303RLS on the lot - they did, but it had been sold. We asked if we could look inside it one last time before deciding to buy, he checked with the manager, who said yes.

We went and the salesman drove us to the unit in his golf cart, hooked up power, put out the slides and gave us the grand tour.

We wanted one, so we went in to talk numbers. They gave us the build sheet with the MSRP and their discounted number, I took out my phone and calculated 30% off MSRP which came out way lower that their number. I showed him the phone and said here is where I'm at. Then he wanted to know if his manager agreed to that number, would we buy it - asked us if we wanted to talk it over - we did.

Said to my wife - boy he went for that pretty fast - lets see what kind of deal we can make getting a front AC thrown in.

He comes back, we tell him we are buyers at that number if front AC is part of the deal - he goes to manager comes back with my number but half the cost of the front AC - 800 bucks. We made the deal, and I now own a 2018 GD Reflection 303RLS. The place was way past closing time when we left.

General RV buys a lot of Grand Design RV's and so they have a lot of inventory - ours was brought down from Virginia.

So no, they aren't going to advertise low prices, because not everyone is willing/or afraid to negotiate. Besides, whatever they are advertising, they are still making a killing on it.

I told my wife before even going in - if we don't get our number or darn close, we're walking out.

Our salesman was awesome - easy going, no hard sell, showed us some used Reflections. He was willing to go to his manager with any number we gave him. He even told us during one of our tours that of course we weren't going to pay MSRP.

If your in Jacksonville, PM me, I'll give you his contact info.

Winnebago may have purchased Grand Deign, but they are keeping their hands off in terms of how GD runs the business. On the Grand Design Owners Forum, many folks have said they purchased their GD units for between 25 and 30% below MSRP. We were right at 30% off MSRP on our. This is not too different from many other brands. Experiences with different dealerships can and will vary widely.

Thanks, Rob (and Sandia Man). That's what I wanted to know. If I need to drive a few hours to save a few thousand on the same model it's worth it to me. I can call around and if their price is too high I can tell them no thanks.

  • An often used sales ploy, of course there is nothing wrong with making a call either, even prices well below msrp as shown on many dealer web sites are still negotiable. A quick check online for the Grand Design model were are interested in varied as much as 20 grand. When shopping we tell them up front we only are concerned with out the door pricing, and don't bother with upsells and warranty pitches as we're not interested. The dealers know with the current demand they have the upper hand, even so with a bit of shrewd negotiating a deal for 30 percent off the mythical msrp can be had.
