Have to hit on Sliding Motor to get slide in

I have a 2003 Fleetwood 31 foot travel trailer bumper pull that has 1 big slide for the living room. The motor works great sliding in & out. When you push the switch to go out it works fine. When you push the switch for it to come in nothing happens If you have someone inside hold the switch position for it to come in and I hit on the motor it pulls it in fine. The motor is a power gear brand part #521748 s/n # 010854625 I'm not sure if these have brushes or contacts that can be replaced but as I check the internet I see Power Gear does not offer parts just complete sliding motors which are expensive. Any information would be greatly appreciated
  • Is there a relay or solenoid on or near the motor? Hitting the motor may be vibrating a bad relay contact causing it to work.
  • Don't hit the motor.. Continued blows to the motor can and most likely will result in shattering the permanent magnets inside rendering it a very expensive door stop..

The problem is with most motors is they are not typically constructed in such a way to be able to open them easily or without causing further damage..

If it does not have screws/bolts holding it together you will end up "can opening" it and a fair chance it will not go back together the way it was or should be..

Failing to move could be an issue with track binding or such and hitting the motor may be enough shock to reduce whatever is binding.
  • Most small dc motors are brush type. So you may be able to disassemble the motor and using some very fine grit sandpaper clean the brushes and commuter to get a little more life out of them. BUT since the motor goes out and not in I would suspect that there is a limit switch that is sticking. I would disassemble the motor and gearbox unit and see if there are any limit switches that you could replace. Just be careful when you disassemble it and observe where everything goes so you can put it all together again.
