intake manifold gasket

these days while it is so cold out my 02 chevy 6 L truck runs very rough, until it warms up. was out to my friend dealer and he told me I should have the intake manifold gasket replaced. asked him if this leak would affect my gas mileage and he told me it sure will. guess that's why I only get 8 mpg towing and about 10 or 11 no towing. I used to get 15.6 not towing. this must have been going on for some time and i just haven't noticed. I think I will have them clean out the air intake while they have it off and maybe I can get back up to my good gas mileage again. I am getting ready to go to Yuma towing our new TT in a few weeks, if the weather allows it. the winds are blowing hard here today. glad I'm not ready to go yet. Have been asking a lot of question here myself about fuel stops etc, if I get this fixed maybe I can miss a gas station or two going down.

Your real concern should be coolant getting into the cylinders and destroying the engine as the coolant gets into the motor oil. With my vehicles I buy aftermarket gaskets as they cost no more than the ones from the dealer and I get better quality.

    Impossible on the Chevy 6.0L.

  • 8 to 10 is what I got towing on my 6.0 . Remember this years winter blend fuel might be giving you even worse mileage. Run some seafoam through the tank and maybe the summer fuel will bring u back to the mileage you remember ???
  • I have bolts missing on my 2000 suburban 5.3 the ones closest to the firewall. My motor has 200,000 on it and I was getting a slight from the manifold there. Bought a 10 dollar high temp epoxy puddy from ace hardware, rolled it up like a snake and carefully tucked it around the manifold where the slight leak was. PRESTO !!!! leak gone and the puddy is holding up now for 8 months. I will just add more when needed. That stuff set up rock hard!!!
  • A vacuum leak on a mass airflow engine is bad. The mass airflow sensor needs to see the airflow so as to calculate how much fuel to deliver. If the air is getting around the MAF sensor the computer will be lied to. In the old days of TBI the MAP sensor would see the vacuum leak and the computer would richen the mixture to compensate. If the vacuum leak became too great the IAC would close off entirely and the vacuum leak would cause an abnormally high idle.

Might take the time to get the whole intake system cleaned at the same time. My wife's 6.0L Chevy was having an erratic idle. I took out the idle air control motor and cleaned the tip off to get the proper idle back. The tip of her IAC motor was covered with a nasty black goo.
  • It will eventually burn valves and seats. I would not drive it that way at all.
  • Sucking air in the wrong places is not good for sure. Bet you get some of your MPG back.
