Lance right rear wing has gone soft

My 2002 Lance Lite 915 has a right rear wing that has gone soft due to a water leak. I have removed the skin and am wondering what quality and thickness the plywood under the skin is. I had to prop up the rear corner and remove the jack to get at the trim screws, they were still tough to get out. One good thing is the original sealant was still soft and plyable. I'm wondering if it is Plybond at least I think that is the name of it. I'm looking for someone that has done this project so I can bounce my ideas and problems with the job off them. Will appreciate any and all help.

  • Lance is pretty famous for the wing failure. I've repaired mine twice ... this time (I'm right in the middle of it) I switched to solid marine plywood and edged it with one inch of maple hardwood for a good grip on the screws, instead of screwing into edge of plywood.. Then glued and screwed it together so no water can get in. It's now a solid piece with no hollow core to hold water.

    I'm reinstalling the metal edges so it protects the wood from road stones and debris from kicking up. But the metal edge is now only a protector for the edge of the wood.

    Gotta tell ya', this was truly a hassle getting all the pieces off. Seems like Lance glues it where it don't need it, and leaves off the caulking where it does. I found several areas that should have been caulked, and you guessed it - NO caulking ... should be good to go when this is finish. Will supply pics for anyone interested.
  • I also rebuilt our rear skirts but not a Lance, its an a Elkhorn.
    Thread on our effort to fix. Hopefully yours will be simpler. One of those put -off projects that only gets worse if not addressed. Its a probalmatic area for about all truck campers. Many have tackled.

    There are few good threads in the TCU sticky, couple Lances rebuilding the rear skirts.
  • Just wanted to take a minute and thank you all for the relies and information. I may contact a couple of you with questions as I go along. Right now I have removed the trim and panel and have been cleaning them. The rot seems to go a little above the lower panel and I haven't quite figured out how I'm going to proceed. I will say one thing about Lance, what ever the corking they used was still fresh and plyable after 14 years. I was amazed I could but will not used it over in places. I'm thinking of using plybond anyone have any better suggestions. I expect to need more help as I go along. (Monkey I also used to run Nauset Beach years ago before the split opened up)

  • Oh yeah - lots of beach camping out Nauset ... that's what a camper is great for in that area. Haven't been around there in a few years.

    OP, I'll dig up photos of the last repair - and also photo this one. Last one failed again, this one won't. So, if you can wait a week, I'll have this done and show it.

  • When faced with wing rot,I purchased a Fein oscillating tool ,great for cutting out the rotten sections. The Fein is the top of the line, I don't believe in cheap tools,but $30 will buy you a no name. For splicing the new wood back in, a Kreg pocket hole jig works well.

    There is a bothersome chore, re applying the trim. I really believe manufactures use grey butyl tape so RVs will leak and rot, lasting just as long as your payments, so you have to buy new ones. I clean the siding and trim with solvent and use lots of Proflex. It's expensive, slow and messy, but the camper should out last me when I've done all the trim.

    This is a post on my lance wing repair. Would be happy to help. Going to have a wing repair on my 1161 sometime in the next year or so. (The post is about the repair on my previous camper - a 1061 that I have since sold).
