..........THe 2001 through 2005 Duramax's required a rework of the heads and usually a set of rebuilt injectors by 200k miles ! Cost ~$11,000 or so . A full tuneup on an 8.1 cost around $600 at the most ! Both came with the Allison , and leave the torque management alone to protect the ally and it'll last a long time . Pulls really strong in stock configuration and available up through the 2007 year model . They're getting hard to find with low milage but probably still available if one has patience . , jf
