Necessary, or peace of mind?

We have a 2000 4Runner Ltd 4WD 3.4L V6, and an equalizing hitch (w/ sway control) hooking up an 18' 2-axle TT with a GVWR at 4850# (and we are NOT minimalists). Plenty of hills and mountains here in the PNW, and we're looking at long-distance trip - essentially cross country - in 2015.

We're very good about maintenance, both for the car and toad. I get that we're asking a lot from the car, and I also understand that there's peace of mind to be had by adding a transmission cooler.

The question is, do I NEED to add the cooler? Once over the Divide, the terrain is, well, you know, Midwest. But the Cascades and Rockies are not trifles, and we don't want to kill (or seriously injure) the trip right out of the gate.

Thanks in advance for those willing to weigh in on the matter. Specifics (if not specifications or hard data) would be greatly appreciated. You know, to help with expense justification.

  • Transmission cooler? If you don't have one I would get one, its the mountains that kill you not the flat terrain.
  • -Auxiliary transmission coolers are cheap.

    -New/rebuilt transmissions are not cheap.

-Breakdowns away from home are SO not cheap that one might even say that they are very, very expensive. Especially if you're the husband who is going to get blamed for ruining the trip by not installing a hundred dollar preventive piece of hardware! ;)

Eighty-one bucks for a heavy duty unit!
  • Automatic? Temp gauge? Typically down shift to help engine/trans cooling?
A cooler would probably be money well spent. Have fun.
  • When we go up in the Rockies I always hit the dash button to Transmission temp.If it gets to 190 degrees we find a place to stop and take a break. Also on the way down, stop once in a while and let your brakes cool down. Have a great trip.
  • you need to monitor the tranny temp. I recommend the torque app. 12 dollars in all, pulls codes, monitors everything the computer tells it, and can use it on any car. i mainly use it on my 'stroke but also on the wifes 4runner(02)

That said, i recommend the b&m cooler. the problem with third gen 4runners is that at any time, the radiator will milkshake you. Coolant and tranny fluid will mix and ultimately destroy your tranny. the b&m is cheap insurance for a cooler tranny as well as eliminating the chance of milkshaking
  • Cross country trip...mountains, summer heat, long days towing.

The question is, do I NEED to add the cooler?
    The answer is, yes.
  • Why don't you hook up and go up of Stevens pass, that will give you an indication if you need one or not.

(For what is worth) my son's brother in law was towing a smallish U-Haul type trailer and his would hardly tow it, but he did have some big tires on it. Which throws off towing power and trans ratio's big time. Also bring along a temp gun to see if temps on radiator are evenly disturbed (indication of how radiator is cooling or getting plugged up). That would be a good test IMO and close to home if any troubles came up.

If you need a cooler and have room the coolers out of 6.0's are very good because of plumbing sizes or pipe sizes, I've been told.
