I have a 3680lbs travel trailer I need moved 300miles from Palmdale california to Bishop california. I am trying to figure out the best/safest way to do this. Once the trailer is moved it won't be moved again, it will be used on a friends property. I have been looking for rental options and what im seeing is that no auto rental places allow towing with their pickup trucks. The only option seems to be a larger uhaul box truck, but from what i've read they only allow towing of their own trailers, not personal trailers. Which leaves me with... few options.I own a 4 door Jeep wrangler. The max weight I am seeing for it is 3500lbs. But I dont know if thats the weight with or without a weight distribution hitch. I have a brake controller and weight distribution hitch with sway control but Im still very nervous about attempting to tow this trailer with this vehicle. Does anyone have any recommendations of where to rent a tow vehicle or how to get this trailer moved?

Funny you should ask- somebody else posted a similar question a few days ago, and it turns out that Enterprise has a "truck division" with pickups all set up to tow. I think the O.P. there called someone and got a surprisingly low quote.Details in this thread

you could see if an RV dealer could do this or even a tow truck- might be expensive but if only moved once. do you belong to any camping clubs?

U-Haul will allow you to tow your trailer with some of their trucks...they even offer brake controllers! Your TT could be towed by the little 10' van (SRW GMC 3500), actually.

The Rental company doesn't find out what isn't told. Get a U-Haul and tow the trailer any way.

If your tow rating and your trailer weight are accurate and you have some experience towing I would just use your vehicle. You're only talking 180 pounds. If your WDH it set up right and you eliminate any extra weight you can (water, propane, gear in the trailer) you shouldn't have any problems.
I realize you're in CA and they have all kinds of crazy rules. However, as a general rule the tow rating of a vehicle is not a legally enforceable number. There are many many people towing slightly above their rating all the time with very few problems.

Really? From what i've been reading online it seems that its recommended you dont go above 80% of your vehicles tow rating. The jeep is a tough call. Most vehicles in its class are rated at 5,000lbs. From reading online it seems thats likely because of cooling or because its a convertible or both. I do have an auxiliary transmission cooler that was installed by chrysler when I first got my jeep. My biggest worry is not harm to my vehicle but safety and legal issues should the worst happen. But I realize that this isn't a legal forum and "i read it on the internet" doesn't usually go over well with a judge.

Another point to consider is what condition is the trailer in? How are the tires, brakes, bearings, etc? How long has it been sitting, if it has? Is it roadworthy? Just some thoughts.
